IU denounces that Marbella is replacing its green areas with cement and luxury

IU denounces the disappearance of 'green Marbella' for a model of cement and luxury housing, following the felling of hundreds of trees in Las Chapas.

The local coordinator of IU, Manuel Núñez, warns that the city is losing trees and green spaces in favour of luxury developments that are inaccessible to residents.

Manuel Núñez, coordinator of the local IU assembly in Marbella, has criticised the current urban model of the municipality, accusing it of burying the “green Marbella” under a slab of cement and luxury housing. In statements made yesterday, the leftist leader denounced that the city “builds and builds” while its natural spaces disappear.

The felling of trees in Las Chapas, the latest example

Núñez's criticisms come days after residents of the Las Chapas district reported the removal of hundreds of trees, mostly around the Estrella del Mar hotel. A situation that, according to the IU coordinator, “is not an isolated incident”, but the general trend of a municipality where “parcel by parcel, the tree cover disappears.”

“What happened in Las Chapas is scandalous, but unfortunately, it is not an isolated incident; it reflects the day-to-day reality of a municipality where, parcel by parcel, the tree cover disappears and cement takes its place,” Núñez stated.

The local leader emphasised that the felling of trees is not a one-off phenomenon, but rather a systematic pattern that transforms the Marbella landscape. “We are seeing construction and more construction, felling after felling, and cement and more cement,” he lamented.

Luxury housing inaccessible to residents

Núñez focused on the type of developments being erected in the city. A large part of the new buildings, he explained, are aimed at the luxury market, with prices “absolutely unattainable” for most of those who live and work in Marbella. “We have to ask ourselves a question: build more, for whom?” the IU coordinator questioned.

The spokesperson for the leftist coalition lamented that Marbella is losing “trees and green spaces” and that the houses being built “are not what families and workers need.” In his opinion, the municipality is being sacrificed to consolidate a model of a city “increasingly oriented towards luxury and less thought out for those of us who live here all year round.”

“The municipality is being sacrificed to consolidate a model of a city increasingly oriented towards luxury and less thought out for those of us who live here all year round,” Núñez added.

IU's statements reopen the debate about the urban direction of Marbella, a city that in recent decades has focused on high-income tourism. Meanwhile, residents of areas like Las Chapas see how cement advances over the greenery that has characterised the district for years.

For those who want to witness firsthand the impact of these policies, IU has called an open assembly at the Las Chapas civic centre next Thursday at 19:00, where upcoming initiatives to halt the loss of green spaces will be discussed.
