The City Museum hosts a collection of replicas of torches, uniforms, and memorabilia from athletes like Theresa Zabell, Juanito, or María de Valdés from July 17 to August 26.

The exhibition 'Olympic Legends' will open its doors next Friday, July 17, at the City Museum of Fuengirola, an event that promises to transport visitors through the history of the Olympics. Organised by the Sports Museum and framed within the municipal programme 'Fuengirola Olympic', the exhibition will remain until August 26 and brings together over a hundred original pieces spanning from 1968 to the present day.

A journey through torches and Olympic legends

The collection includes replicas of all the Olympic torches since 1968, an element that symbolises the spirit of the Games. Each torch is accompanied by garments and items from athletes who made history, both national and international. Among them, the Olympic diploma of Mariano Haro from Munich 1972, an original uniform from the Spanish Olympic Committee of those years, and the trousers of Juan Antonio Corbalán, which commemorate the silver in basketball at the Los Angeles 1984.

The podium tracksuit of Mercedes Coghen, captain of the hockey team in Barcelona 1992, and the iconic mascot Cobi also have their space. The exhibition does not forget the greats of the 21st century: David Cal and his podium tracksuit from the gold in Athens 2004, the boots of José Manuel Calderón (silver in Beijing 2008 and London 2012), the tracksuit of Lydia Valentín from Rio 2016, the polo shirt of Alberto Fernández (gold in shooting in Tokyo 2020), and the podium tracksuit of María Pérez and Álvaro Martín, gold in walking in Paris 2024.

Local prominence: the Fuengirola Olympians

The exhibition dedicates a special section to the athletes from Fuengirola who have shone at the Games. Mayor Ana Mula highlighted double champion Theresa Zabell, footballer Juan Gómez 'Juanito', and swimmer María de Valdés. “In Fuengirola, we are committed to sports and our athletes. To all of them. To those who practice for pleasure and to our stars from the past and present,” emphasised the mayor during the presentation.

For the residents of the Costa del Sol, this exhibition represents a unique opportunity to see closely objects that are usually only displayed in large museums. The Councillor for Sports, Julio Rodríguez, reminded that entry will be free and that visiting hours will be adapted for families. The exhibition is expected to attract thousands of visitors, both locals and tourists, reinforcing Fuengirola's commitment to sports as a hallmark of identity.

An Olympic summer in the city

The initiative is part of the 'Fuengirola Olympic' programme, which organises sports and cultural activities during the summer. The mayor thanked the Sports Museum for choosing the city for this exhibition. “I am convinced that it will be a unique opportunity to feel emotions, learn, and remember some of the most unforgettable moments in the history of the Olympics,” she concluded.

The exhibition will be open from Tuesday to Sunday, with morning and afternoon hours. For sports enthusiasts, it is an unmissable event in the summer calendar of the province. And for those who are not as keen, it is still worth a visit: after all, seeing an Olympic torch up close is always impressive, even if one is not quite sure if the flame is real or fake.
