Estepona's Town Hall is finalising the comprehensive renovation of the Museum of the Sea, which includes three display cases for the López Mateo collection, new panels, three audiovisuals, and an immersive room about the posidonia meadow. The investment amounts to €65,347.87, financed 70% by the FEMPA and 30% by the Junta de Andalucía.
The Estepona Town Hall is finalising the renovation and improvement works of the Museum of the Sea, one of the municipal museums located in the facilities of the Plaza de Toros in the city. The project has involved a complete renewal of the exhibition space, with new elements to enhance the presentation and dissemination of content about Estepona's maritime tradition and its historical connection to the sea, as indicated by the councillor in charge of the Historical Heritage area, Daniel García Ramos.
Among the main innovations is the installation of three large display cases that will house part of the López Mateo collection, considered one of the best in Spain for navigation and fishing instruments. The larger pieces have been relocated to a more spacious area to improve their display.
Several large-format panels have also been installed, providing information on fishing, marine environment protection, boat building, the canning industry, and maritime traditions. The renovation includes three audiovisual productions that can be viewed on a monitor installed in the room, dedicated to the Alboran Sea and its biodiversity, boat building, and the tradition of the Virgin of Carmen.
The display cases and panels have been manufactured and installed by Redes Descanso S.L., while the graphic and audiovisual content has been developed by the local company Acaire, S.C.A.
The project also includes an immersive room, equipped with screens and interactive resources, that will recreate a posidonia meadow. The aim is to raise visitors' awareness about the conservation of the marine environment along the coasts of Estepona, where one of the four posidonia populations in the province of Málaga is located.
“The recreation of a posidonia meadow in the Ethnographic Museum will provide a unique experience for visitors, allowing them to appreciate the importance of its conservation for maintaining biodiversity in the Mediterranean,” stated García Ramos.
The investment amounts to €65,347.87. The European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (FEMPA) of the European Union contributes 70%, and the remaining 30% is financed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development of the Junta de Andalucía.
Estepona Town Hall inaugurated the Museum of the Sea in November 2025 to pay tribute to the millennia-old relationship between humans and the ocean. The centre houses the Miguel López Mateo Collection, with hundreds of restored and classified pieces, from astronomical navigation instruments to 19th-century diving equipment, models, fishing gear, and everyday objects from life on board.
