The town of Piedras Blancas, in Asturias, has been the scene of a discriminatory assault that has led to the arrest of five men by the Civil Guard.
The detainees, aged between 18 and 20, are accused of physically and verbally assaulting a woman due to her gender identity. The victim required medical attention due to the severity of her injuries.
Details of the assault
The assault occurred in January and, according to the victim's report, a group linked to far-right circles organised through instant messaging apps to carry out the attack. During the assault, death threats and transphobic insults were shouted, highlighting the hate motivation related to the woman's gender identity.
Identification and background of the assailants
Investigations carried out by the Civil Guard's hate crime response team led to the identification of the five men involved. Two of them were arrested in April, another two in June, and the last one a few days ago.
All are charged with hate crimes in the form of bodily harm, threats, and damage, aggravated by discriminatory motivation. Additionally, three of the detainees had already been investigated last year for other hate and discrimination-related crimes.
The actions taken are part of an operation coordinated by the delegated prosecutor for hate crimes and discrimination of the Provincial Prosecutor's Office of Asturias, with the proceedings submitted to the Court of First Instance of Avilés.
This case reinforces the Civil Guard's commitment to combating hate crimes and protecting the rights of vulnerable individuals.
