The town of Málaga welcomes a new school year, with more than 162,714 students enrolled in 313 educational centres. The start of classes for Secondary, Baccalaureate and Vocational Training (FP) has been accompanied by a visit from the Minister of Education, María del Carmen Castillo, to the Santa Bárbara Secondary Education Institute.
Increase in teachers and education in Málaga
This academic year, the Junta of Andalucía has decided to strengthen Vocational Training by incorporating 1,216 new teachers, a measure that responds to the growing demand in this educational field. Castillo highlighted that FP is one of the strategic commitments of the Andalusian Government, facilitating access to the job market.
In total, 887,532 students will start their classes in Andalucía, over 695,500 in public education and around 116,500 in private subsidised schools. However, there has been a decrease of 11,600 students compared to the previous year, attributed to low birth rates in the region.
Data on Vocational Training
The province of Málaga, in particular, has 36,581 students enrolled in Vocational Training, representing an increase of 1,777 new students compared to the previous year. The majority of these students, around 70%, choose public educational centres.
The IES Santa Bárbara, where the Minister's visit took place, hosts 1,000 students in Secondary, Baccalaureate and FP programmes, supported by a teaching team of 106 teachers. This institute offers a wide range of vocational training cycles, excelling in the health and emergency areas.
Overall, vocational training in Andalucía continues its growth trend. Since the 2018/19 academic year, there has been an increase of almost 50% in enrolment, with 76,700 new registrations, strengthening the educational infrastructure in 494 public centres thanks to an investment exceeding 106 million euros this year.
