The Málaga City Council requests a grant of nearly €600,000 from the Tourism Department to draft the basic and execution project for the expansion of the venue, which will add 37,300 square meters.
The local government board of the Málaga City Council has approved requesting nearly €600,000 from the Junta de Andalucía to continue with the expansion project of the Exhibition and Congress Palace. The request is directed to the Tourism Department and will fund the drafting of the basic and execution project, as reported by Diario Sur.
The spokesperson for the government team and councillor for Urbanism, Carmen Casero, detailed in a press conference that the Urban Planning Management is still processing the necessary permits. Casero was accompanied by the councillor for Culture, Mariana Pineda, who also informed that the sculptural group by Ginés Serrán will remain at the entrance of the Port for at least a year following the artist's donation.
Last August, the local government board approved the detailed study that urbanistically orders the expansion over an adjacent plot of 37,300 square meters. The total area of action covers 49,100 square meters, resulting from adding those 37,300 to 11,800 square meters of the plot where the Exhibition Palace currently stands, in order to resolve the physical and architectural continuity between the existing building and the new extension.
The maximum buildable area planned is 60,000 square meters, which will be added to the existing venue to meet the demand for congresses, fairs, and large events. According to the PP government team, the current capacity has been limited by the dimensions of the building.
Casero explained that it was the Junta de Andalucía itself that expressed its intention to collaborate on the project. The expansion aims to strengthen the functional capacity of the venue, improve its competitiveness, and adapt the facilities to the demands of the congress and fair sector, impacting the economic activity of the city and attracting new events.
“The Junta expressed its intention to collaborate on the project,” Casero noted.
The Málaga City Council hopes that the grant will allow for the tendering of the project drafting and advance in an action that it considers strategic for the city.
