A total of 4,097 students in Secondary Education and Baccalaureate have started classes in Benalmádena. The mayor, Juan Antonio Lara, inaugurated the school year at IES Poetas Andaluces and reviewed the works of the new institute in Benalmádena Pueblo and the expansion of IES Arroyo de la Miel.
The 2026-2027 school year has begun in Benalmádena with 4,097 students enrolled in Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) and Baccalaureate. The mayor, Juan Antonio Lara, accompanied by the Education councillor, visited IES Poetas Andaluces on Tuesday to welcome students and teachers on the first day of class.
During the visit, the mayor reviewed the state of the main educational infrastructures in the municipality. The works for the new institute in Benalmádena Pueblo are progressing at a "very good pace," according to the mayor, with an investment from the Junta de Andalucía exceeding 10 million euros. The centre will have 500 places, of which 360 will be for ESO and 140 for Baccalaureate, and is being built on a municipal plot ceded by the City Council. This is an infrastructure that has been requested for over 15 years.
"We start a new school year with enthusiasm and, above all, with significant advances for education in Benalmádena," the mayor stated.
Meanwhile, work has begun to complete the expansion of IES Arroyo de la Miel. The Junta has awarded this project for over 900,000 euros, and the project will allow the building to be completed with four multipurpose classrooms and correct the deficiencies from the first phase. The total investment in this expansion is around 1.5 million euros.
IES Poetas Andaluces has been one of the centres benefiting from municipal investments in digitalisation. The City Council has allocated 29,500 euros to equip the centre with 120 devices: 60 laptops and 60 tablets. The initiative came from the educational community itself and was the most supported proposal by residents in the Participatory Budgets.
"Our work is not limited to the maintenance and improvement of facilities, but we want to be alongside the centres, families, and the educational community," highlighted Juan Antonio Lara.
The mayor framed these actions within the collaboration between the City Council and the Junta de Andalucía: "These are two very clear examples that collaboration between administrations works." The mayor recalled that the City Council ceded the land for the future institute in Benalmádena Pueblo and valued the investment effort of the Andalusian Government to respond to "historical needs" of the municipality.
