The Junta of Andalucía has modified the funding agreement for the future Auditorium of Music in Málaga, maintaining its contribution of 25 million but adapting the payment schedule to the project's progress.
The original agreement, signed in December 2024, established a fixed payment schedule that did not align with the actual processing timelines. The addendum incorporates the results of the preliminary market consultation, which has allowed for the final budget and execution timelines to be set.
The Málaga City Council, through Promálaga, initiated the preliminary steps for the tender with a consultation to construction companies. Following this process, it plans to put the works out to tender in the coming months, aiming to lay the first stone between October and November.
The auditorium will be built on the San Andrés platform, on land belonging to the Port of Málaga. The project, with an estimated investment of 209 million euros, will have an execution period of 48 months, so its opening is projected for 2030.
The building will occupy more than 30,000 square meters and will feature a main hall with a capacity close to 2,000 seats, as well as a chamber hall, rehearsal spaces, dressing rooms, technical areas, administrative offices, and dining areas. The complex, designed by architects Federico Soriano and Agustín Benedicto, will also include an underground car park, new road and pedestrian connections, as well as the urbanization of the surrounding area.
The modification of the agreement does not alter the regional contribution of 25 million euros, but adapts the timelines for executing and justifying the grant. The Junta and the City Council thus synchronize public disbursements with the expected pace of the work.
The Auditorium of Music is one of the most anticipated cultural infrastructures in Málaga, a city that lacks a large facility of this kind. The forecast is that the works will begin at the end of 2026 and last for four years.
Residents of the San Andrés area have expressed their support for the project, although they are calling for measures to minimize disruptions during construction. The City Council has committed to keeping the public informed through its website and periodic meetings.
With this addendum, the path is cleared for the final tender, which is expected in the coming weeks. The council hopes that the competition will attract large national and international construction companies, given the scale of the project.
