The Málaga Small Shareholders Association has requested the City Council to officially rename the pitch in the La Luz neighbourhood to 'David Larrubia football field', in recognition of his career and the promotion to La Liga.
The Málaga Small Shareholders Association (APA) has submitted a request to the Málaga City Council for the football pitch in the La Luz neighbourhood to be officially named 'David Larrubia football field'. The initiative, unanimously approved at an extraordinary meeting held on June 25, aims to honour the Málaga winger for his career in the club's lower categories and his role in the recent promotion to La Liga.
APA president Antonio Aguilera explained that the proposal acknowledges Larrubia's connection to the neighbourhood where he grew up and where he took his first steps in football, in the Roma Luz team. "It is a source of pride for all Málaga fans to see how a boy from La Luz has come so far and has been key in the promotion," Aguilera declared. The vote took place during the extraordinary meeting, and the decision will be reported to members at the next General Shareholders' Assembly.
David Larrubia, 24, scored the decisive goal in the second leg of the playoff final in Almería, which confirmed Málaga CF's return to the top tier of Spanish football after two seasons in the Second Division. In the 2025/26 season, the winger accumulated 12 goals and 3 assists between the regular phase and the playoffs. "I’ve told all my friends and my girlfriend. I imagine scoring the promotion goal and I get teary-eyed," the player confessed weeks before the match.
The La Luz pitch, located on Avenida Isaac Peral, is currently used by Roma Luz, the team where Larrubia played at the Benjamin level. The facility is close to the residence where the footballer lived during his childhood, which reinforces the symbolism of the proposal. The APA hopes the City Council will consider the request at the next Full Commission and that the name change will be approved before the start of the next season.
The initiative has been supported by numerous residents of the neighbourhood, who see Larrubia as an example of perseverance and roots. "He is a boy who has never forgotten his origins and has always shown his affection for La Luz," said a spokesperson for the residents' association. Málaga CF, for its part, has not officially commented, but sources close to the club indicate that they view the recognition positively.
The promotion of Málaga to La Liga has been one of the most significant milestones of the season in Spanish football. After two years in the Second Division, the team managed by Sergio Pellicer achieved their return to the elite in an exciting final against UD Almería. Larrubia, who came through the Málaga youth academy, has become one of the fans' idols.
The APA has requested that the name change be implemented as soon as possible and is confident that the Málaga City Council, which has already supported similar initiatives in the past, will approve the proposal. "It would be a fitting tribute to a player who has given everything for Málaga and represents the values of our neighbourhood," Aguilera concluded.
