The Asociación Centro Histórico de Málaga has appointed actress María Barranco as the Standard Bearer of the Málaga Fair 2026. The Málaga-born performer will carry the city flag during the pilgrimage on August 15.
The Málaga actress María Barranco has been named the Standard Bearer of the Málaga Fair 2026, a recognition awarded each year by the Asociación Centro Histórico de Málaga (CCA) to a personality linked to the city and its traditions. The decision was made by absolute majority at the board meeting of the entity, presided over by Rodrigo Bocanegra Valdés.
Barranco will be responsible for carrying the Flag of Málaga during the XLIII Pilgrimage of the Fair, which will take place on Saturday, August 15. The route will begin at 11:00 from the Town Hall and will end at the Sanctuary of Victoria, where a mass will be held in honour of Santa María de la Victoria, the patron saint of the city.
The Asociación Centro Histórico has invited both Málaga residents and visitors to join the pilgrimage, which it describes as “the most beautiful urban pilgrimage with the greatest tradition in Andalucía.” The route will pass through the main streets of the historic centre and Victoria Street, and it can be done either on foot or by horse-drawn carriage.
The organisation has highlighted that this event is one of the most deeply rooted traditions of the Málaga Fair and encourages participation to keep the celebration alive. The pilgrimage is supported by the Operational Services Area of the Málaga City Council, the Provincial Council of Málaga, Málaga de Moda, Talento Original, CaixaBank, Fundación “la Caixa”, Hampton by Hilton Málaga Martiricos, Grupo Safamotor, Cruzcampo, Cartojal, and Coca-Cola.
María Barranco, born in Málaga, is one of the most recognised actresses in Spanish cinema. With over four decades of experience, she has worked in film, theatre, and television. Her popularity grew with the film 'Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown' by Pedro Almodóvar. Throughout her career, she has received two Goya Awards for Best Supporting Actress.
Despite her national and international prominence, Barranco has maintained a close connection with Málaga, participating in cultural and social initiatives in the city. Her appointment as standard bearer is a recognition of her artistic career and her commitment to her hometown.
The Málaga Fair 2026 will be held in August, with the pilgrimage being one of the central events. Attendees will be able to enjoy a day of tradition and devotion in honour of the patron saint of the Málaga capital.
