The collection campaign organised by the Rapid Response Volunteer Group and ASOIN has gathered over four tonnes of medical supplies, which will be sent to Venezuela to help the victims of the earthquakes on June 24.

The solidarity of the people of Málaga knows no bounds. In just four days, the city has managed to collect over four tonnes of medical supplies that will travel to Venezuela to alleviate the situation of those affected by the earthquakes on June 24. The campaign, driven by the Rapid Response Volunteer Group and the Civil Association Somos Integración (ASOIN), has received a massive response from the public.

Donations that save lives

Between Monday and Thursday last week, the Municipal Centre for Participatory Resources of the Málaga City Council became a collection point for medicines, saline solution, gauze, dressings, masks, and disinfectants. Emergency lamps, batteries, and flashlights have also been donated, essential items in an area devastated by the earthquakes.

The Councillor for Participation, Mar Torres, visited the facilities on Friday to oversee the sorting of the materials. "The response from the people of Málaga has been incredible. This shows that solidarity knows no borders," the councillor stated.

"We are very grateful for the involvement of all citizens and collaborating entities."

A coordinated aid effort

The collected materials will be sent and distributed in coordination with cooperation organisations working on the ground in Venezuela. In fact, a first batch of 350 kilos is already prepared for the Venezuelan town of Valencia, which will be dispatched in the coming days.

The Area of Participation, Migration, and Development Cooperation of the City Council convened the Emergency Table on Wednesday, attended by entities such as the Red Cross, UNHCR, Peace and Development, Covide Amve, ASOIN, and the Rapid Response Volunteer Group. All of them shared information about the needs on the ground and established criteria for channeling the aid.

Emergency fund of 35,000 euros

To reinforce the response, the City Council has allocated a budget of 35,000 euros from the Emergency Fund. Entities have until July 9 to submit their projects, which will be evaluated by a technical team based on criteria such as operational feasibility, logistical efficiency, and focus on the most vulnerable people. The goal is for the aid to reach those who need it most as soon as possible.

For the residents of Málaga, this campaign represents an opportunity to channel their solidarity effectively. Those who still wish to collaborate can find out more at the Municipal Centre for Participatory Resources or through the organising entities. The next meeting will be the evaluation of the projects, which will determine how the municipal funds are used.
