The Real Cuerpo de Bomberos de Málaga will incorporate 50 new officials in the coming weeks, raising the workforce to 306 members.

The promotion of 50 firefighters who have just completed their training course at the Public Safety School of the Málaga City Council (Espam) will join the Real Cuerpo de Bomberos of the city in the coming weeks. With this new intake, the workforce will reach 306 members, a figure that exceeds the previous total by 90 at the end of 2023.

The delegate councillor for Security, Avelino Barrionuevo, presided over the closing ceremony of the course, held at the Central Fire Station in Martiricos. The event was also attended by senior officers of the corps, officials, and teachers from Espam. Barrionuevo highlighted that this is the final test of the recruitment process included in the public employment offers from 2021, 2022, and 2023.

These 50 new officials join the 40 who took office in December 2023 and the four technical officers who joined in May of last year. In total, the City Council has filled 94 positions in just two and a half years, a replacement rate not seen since the 2008 crisis.

The reinforcement plan does not stop there. The public employment offers for 2024 and 2025, already approved, include another 45 positions, while a proposal for 40 more is being developed for 2026. If all deadlines are met, the workforce could exceed 350 members by 2027, which would improve response times across the city.

In parallel, the City Council has completed the process of professional reclassification for 162 firefighters, who have had their years of service recognised with a promotion. There are still 23 cases pending from the previous recruitment process, whose files are being processed. This process is part of the new internal organisation regulation of the corps, which has been in effect since July 2024, modernising shifts and resource allocation.

The mass recruitment responds to the need to rejuvenate a corps where a quarter of the workforce is over 55 years old. The new firefighters have an average age of 28 and have passed a demanding selection process that included physical tests, psychotechnical assessments, and a six-month theoretical-practical course at Espam.

According to municipal sources, the total investment in salaries and equipment for these 50 officials is around 2.5 million euros annually, which is in addition to the 1.8 million euros allocated for the purchase of two new fire engines.

The next recruitment process, corresponding to 2026, is expected to be published in the first quarter of the year. Interested parties can consult the terms on the Málaga City Council website.
