The Málaga City Council has convened the Emergency Table to coordinate aid for the victims of the earthquakes in Venezuela and has allocated a fund of €35,000. Social entities have until July 9 to submit their projects.
The Málaga City Council has launched an emergency device to channel humanitarian aid to Venezuela, following the devastating earthquakes that have shaken the country. The Councillor for Participation, Mar Torres, chaired the meeting of the Emergency Table on Wednesday, attended by representatives from Red Cross, UNHCR, Peace and Development, Covide Amve, the Civil Association We Are Integration (Asoin), and the Rapid Response Volunteer Group.
The aim of this meeting was to coordinate efforts, avoid duplications, and design effective humanitarian aid initiatives. The entities shared updated information from their delegations on the ground, advanced in diagnosing needs, and unified criteria for channelling resources. The City Council has allocated a budget of €35,000 from the Emergency Fund to finance the actions.
Deadline and requirements for submitting projects
Interested entities can submit their projects from July 2 to 9 via the email accionexterior@malaga.eu. The application must detail the planned actions and the financial breakdown. A technical team will evaluate the proposals considering the principle of immediate humanitarian action, operational viability, logistical efficiency, transparency, and focus on the most vulnerable people.
This aid adds to the campaign for collecting medical supplies that is already underway, organised by the Rapid Response Volunteer Group and Asoin. The materials will be sent to hospitals in Venezuela. The collection point is the Municipal Centre for Participatory Resources, located at Corregidor Francisco de Molina, 1 (Cruz del Humilladero district), open from 09:00 to 21:00 continuously until tomorrow Thursday.
The donation of medical products is considered a priority: emergency medications (painkillers, antibiotics, antipyretics, antiseptics) and for chronic diseases (hypertension, diabetes, asthma), as well as saline solution, gauze, dressings, masks, hand sanitizers, emergency lamps, batteries, and flashlights.
A fund with history: from Gujarat to Venezuela
The Emergency Table was created in 2010 after the earthquake in Haiti, but the municipal emergency fund has existed since 2001, when it was established to address the earthquakes in Gujarat (India) and El Salvador. Since then, it has been activated multiple times: Chile and Haiti (2010), Japan (2011), the Philippines (2013), Nepal (2015), Ecuador (2016), Haiti (2016), and Morocco, Turkey, and Syria (2023).
For the residents of Málaga, this initiative represents an opportunity to contribute in an organised manner to alleviate the effects of a disaster that has left thousands of people homeless and without resources. The City Council encourages individuals and entities to collaborate with donations or through the participating NGOs. Next week, the selected projects are expected to begin implementation, aiming to deliver aid as soon as possible to the most affected areas.
