The coach who has returned Málaga CF to the Primera División after eight years of absence, Juanfran Funes, will be responsible for launching the Málaga Fair 2026. The event will take place on Saturday, August 15, at the Cortijo de Torres venue.
The mayor of Málaga, Francisco de la Torre, was the one who conveyed the proposal to him in person during a meeting held at La Rosaleda and shared on social media. “The city of Málaga wants you to be the town crier of the Fair. Do you accept?” the mayor asked. Funes accepted and described the invitation as “an honour and a true pleasure.”
The choice comes at a sweet moment for the club, which is facing its return to the elite of Spanish football. Additionally, the postponement of the league debut, caused by the presence of Atlético de Madrid players in the World Cup final, leaves the team free that weekend before debuting on August 19 at the Metropolitano.
Juan Francisco Funes Arjona, born in Loja in 1983 and settled on the Costa del Sol for the past decade, arrived in Málaga in 2017 to manage El Palo. After three seasons with the paleño team, he joined the blanquiazul youth academy, where he spent five years in charge of the reserve team, training many of the players who now make up the Primera División squad.
His leap to the first team occurred in a complicated context, with Atlético Malagueño in the lower positions of Segunda RFEF. Months later, he achieved the historic promotion that has placed Málaga CF back among the elite. Now, alongside that achievement, comes the honour of being the town crier of the Fair, one of the most anticipated events on the Málaga calendar.
