Historian José Jiménez Guerrero received the gold shield from the Brotherhoods Association on Saturday at the church of San Julián, a recognition that the entity grants for the first time under the presidency of José Carlos Garín.
The historian José Jiménez Guerrero (Málaga, 1952) received the gold shield from the Brotherhoods Association at the church of San Julián, the entity's temple, after the mass in honour of the Virgin Queen of Heaven officiated by the episcopal delegate of Brotherhoods, Salvador Guerrero. This is the first gold shield awarded and presented by the current president, José Carlos Garín, since he took office in October 2023, according to Diario Sur.
The process for the award began by unanimous agreement of the association's directors in the session of February 16 and was backed by the brotherhoods of Zamarrilla, Salud, Mena, and Nueva Esperanza. The presented report highlighted "his extensive career in research, dissemination, and service to the history of the Málaga brotherhoods and associations," as well as "his closeness, his dialogue-oriented nature, and his constant willingness to serve the brotherhoods and associations."
The gold shield of the Brotherhoods Association was established in 1980 to recognise careers particularly linked to Holy Week in Málaga. In Jiménez Guerrero's case, the institution emphasised that his work "has decisively contributed to the knowledge and appreciation of the history of Málaga's Holy Week."
"Logically, after the initial surprise, it constitutes a satisfaction and also an honour. It is not very common for such recognitions to occur during one's lifetime," explains José Jiménez Guerrero.
"I believe that the gold shield also serves to highlight a work that often remains in the background: that of those who have dedicated years to researching, documenting, and telling the history of the brotherhoods," says the historian.
José Jiménez Guerrero holds a PhD in History and is a brother of the Zamarrilla Brotherhood. His research career has focused on the political and social history of Málaga in the 19th and 20th centuries, with special attention to popular piety. In the brotherhood context, his name is associated with numerous investigations and publications about the past of the brotherhoods and Málaga's Holy Week.
He was the preacher of Málaga's Holy Week in 1998, a appointment he remembers "with special affection" and which he once regarded as a "gift." "The next Easter Sunday, March 28, 2027, will mark 29 years since my sermon. It was in 1998. However, despite so many years having passed, the memory takes me back to that day as if it had occurred recently," he acknowledges.
"It's one of those things that happen to you in life that mark you, in this case, in a positive way," he confirms.
Between 2001 and 2009, during part of the terms of Clemente Solo de Zaldívar and Rafael Recio, he collaborated with the Association as a chronicler and with articles and research in the magazine La Saeta, the entity's dissemination organ.
