The Chamber of Commerce and the Diputación de Málaga have concluded a trade mission in Tokyo with eight agri-food companies from the Sabor a Málaga brand. The aim: to open a high-value market for wines, oils, and other gourmet products from the province.
Eight agri-food companies affiliated with the Sabor a Málaga brand have returned this week from a trade mission in Japan organized by the Diputación de Málaga and the Chamber of Commerce. The delegation, which developed an intensive agenda in Tokyo, sought to consolidate the presence of Malagueño products in one of the most demanding markets with the greatest potential for European gourmet products.
The initiative, which had the support of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Japan, is part of the internationalization strategy of the provincial brand. According to the president of the Diputación, Francisco Salado, this is “one of the main strategic lines of Sabor a Málaga to generate new growth opportunities for our companies, diversify markets, and strengthen the international prestige of Malagueño products.”
The participating firms represent a varied sample of the agri-food fabric of the province: Trafrut Cano, Bodega Carpe Diem, Bodega Kieninger, Agammasur, Aceites Málaga, Aceitunas y Encurtidos Bravo, Almendrera del Sur, and Chivo de Canillas. Sectors such as wine, oil, olives, pickles, nuts, and goat meat were represented in this initial contact with the Japanese market.
Unlike a conventional promotional action, the mission was conceived as a complete itinerary of preparation and prospecting. Before the trip, the companies received specialized training on Japanese business culture, buyer decision-making processes, product adaptation, and the keys to commercial negotiation in that country.
Once in Tokyo, the program began with an intensive day at the Spanish Embassy, where participants delved into business communication, business protocol, and the importance that Japanese consumers place on packaging and presentation. They also undertook a technical visit focused on packaging to understand how design influences quality perception and purchase decisions.
One of the central moments was the professional showroom Sabor a Málaga held at the Spanish Embassy in Japan, a space designed for direct meetings between Malagueño companies and importers, distributors, and buyers from the Japanese agri-food sector. Throughout the day, the firms presented their products, conducted professional tastings, and held individual meetings to generate business contacts and understand the real possibilities of establishment.
The mission concluded with a retail tour through the main distribution channels in Tokyo. The companies visited international supermarkets, establishments specializing in imported products, large surfaces, and high-end gourmet spaces. The aim was to analyze formats, competition, prices, and the presence of Spanish products in each market segment.
Salado emphasized “the uniqueness of the Japanese market,” which demands a high level of adaptation in aspects such as format, presentation, consumer information, trust, traceability, and the building of medium- and long-term business relationships. For this reason, the Diputación and the Chamber of Commerce of Málaga have combined institutional promotion, commercial preparation, and direct prospecting to increase the chances of success for the participating companies.
The Japanese market is the second location of this internationalization strategy in 2026, following the mission undertaken in March in Poland, which involved ten Malagueño companies. These actions continue the projects developed alongside the Chamber of Commerce in recent years.
For Malagueño companies, the mission represents another step in their commitment to export. The Japanese market, characterized by its high purchasing power and interest in quality gourmet products, presents an opportunity to diversify destinations and reduce dependence on traditional European markets.
The next phase, according to sources from the organization, will be the follow-up of the established contacts and the evaluation of possible commercial agreements. Companies interested in future missions can obtain information through the Chamber of Commerce of Málaga or the Diputación Provincial itself.
