The CER programme in Alhaurín de la Torre reaches 80.67% of active sterilised cats, with a total of 2,202 interventions. The census rises to 2,849 specimens and pending cases drop to 481.
The CER programme (Capture, Sterilisation and Return) in Alhaurín de la Torre has for the first time surpassed 80% of active sterilised cats. As of the end of August, the rate stands at 80.67%, compared to 78.15% in May. A total of 2,202 sterilisations have been carried out: 1,081 males and 1,121 females.
The feline census has grown from 2,708 to 2,849 cats between May and August, an increase of 141. Despite this, the number of animals pending sterilisation has decreased from 528 to 481. The Town Hall attributes this increase in the census to the work of locating and registering, not to a real increase in the population. In the colonies, 2,488 animals remain active and 361 have been recorded as deceased.
Identification through microchipping is also progressing: from 1,518 animals in May to 1,652 by the end of August, an increase of 134 in three months. The programme now includes 228 feeding and control points (221 in May) and a network of 198 volunteer managers (154 women and 44 men), seven more than three months ago.
In the last 2.7 years, 50,985 kilos of food (3,399 bags) have been distributed, with an estimated annual consumption of 19,119 kilos. Over five years, 1,315 adoptions have been managed, 45 more than in May.
The mayor, Joaquín Villanova, stated that surpassing 80% sterilisation “is a very significant figure that demonstrates the enormous work done over these years and the commitment of the Town Hall to continue improving this programme.” The councillor for Health and Environment, Abel Perea, praised the work of the association El Gato Garduño and the volunteers, and reminded that there are still 481 animals pending sterilisation.
The programme is implemented through an agreement in 2023 between the Health Area of the Town Hall, the association El Gato Garduño, and the company IVC Paraíso Residencia Canina S. L. for the comprehensive management of the feline colonies in accordance with current regulations.
