“At first, the groups that entered were there for quite a while. In one of them, a man bent down to take a photo in front of the trophy and tripped over the pedestal, causing the Cup to end up on the ground. It was quite a strong hit,” explained one of the attendees. The museum decided to temporarily close the exhibition due to the possibility that the piece may have been damaged, although it is an official replica: the original is made of gold and is kept by FIFA in Zurich. Visitors waiting in line were informed of the closure and that the exhibition could not continue at that moment, which caused surprise and disappointment among those waiting for their turn. Shortly after, the centre reopened its doors. “We had to close access due to the incident. However, they have been working to resolve it and we have already reopened the doors. We apologise for the inconvenience caused,” the Pompidou posted on its social media.
By the afternoon, the exhibition attracted hundreds of locals and visitors, and the queue wrapped around the building. The wait exceeded two hours to access the museum entrance for just a few minutes. Staff and security guards insisted that the trophy could not be touched or lifted and that visitors should not get too close to avoid another similar incident. Access was free and the venue closed at 9:00 PM, so many of those waiting ultimately left without being able to see the cup.
The World Cup began its tour of Spain in Málaga, where it was exhibited on Sunday and Monday at the Patio de Banderas of the City Hall before moving to the Centre Pompidou on Tuesday. The touring exhibition will continue its route through other cities, although the schedule has not yet been detailed.
