The Nerja Museum has inaugurated 'Formas de Diálogo', an exhibition dedicated to the Tenerife artist María Belén Morales, who passed away in 2016. The exhibition, which can be visited until September 20, brings together drawings, collages, and sculptures created between 1994 and 2004.
The Nerja Museum has opened to the public a new exhibition that traces the career of the Canary sculptor and painter María Belén Morales, who passed away in 2016. Under the title Formas de Diálogo, the exhibition is displayed in the Ana María Márquez room and will be available until September 20. The collection includes drawings, collages, and sculptures that reflect Morales' artistic evolution during her most prolific decade.
The selected pieces were created between 1994 and 2004, a period in which the artist developed her own plastic language, characterised by geometric abstraction and experimentation with materials such as oxidised iron. The exhibition serves as a posthumous tribute from the Málaga locality to the Tenerife creator, who had previously presented some of her large-format works at the Balcón de Europa in Nerja in 1994.
The exhibition has been designed with an inclusive approach, according to sources from the museum. The wall-mounted works have been placed at a height of 1.40 metres to facilitate access for wheelchair users. Additionally, three of the sculptures can be touched, and braille signs and a visitor book have been incorporated, along with a subtitled presentation video and videosigned for deaf individuals, as well as an easy-reading guide.
María Belén Morales was born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1928 and developed her career between the Canary Islands and the Peninsula, especially in Andalusia, where she resided in Córdoba. Her work is characterised by transforming everyday elements, such as agricultural machinery and oxidised iron, into pieces of reflection and language. The artist worked from geometric abstraction and the construction of volumes, leaving her creations in their natural state or covering them with paint according to her expressive intention.
The themes of the exhibition encompass various landscapes that inspired Morales: the cliffs of Tenerife, the Andalusian fields, the Mediterranean coast, and the mountains of the Almijara range. The series Alfil is also included, a recreation of the chess piece in drawings and collages that explore verticality, triangular faces, and diagonal movement.
The exhibition Formas de Diálogo not only allows visitors to learn about the work of a significant 20th-century artist but also offers an accessible experience for all audiences. Museum officials have highlighted that the exhibition aims to bring art closer to people with different abilities, removing physical and sensory barriers.
