Nerja Museum opens its doors this Thursday, July 23, at 20:00 to a new cultural proposal. The Ana María Márquez Room hosts the temporary exhibition 'Forms in Dialogue' by artist and sculptor María Belén Morales, which will be open until September 20. Access to both the inauguration and the rest of the exhibition is free.
The exhibition brings together drawings, collages, and sculptures, sometimes combined, that reflect the artist's ongoing research into configuration and material. Morales, born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1928, developed much of her work in Andalusia, especially in Córdoba, and maintained a close relationship with Nerja, where she exhibited in 1994 at the Balcón de Europa.
The selected pieces span from 1994 to 2004, a decade that critics consider the most prolific of her career. They showcase the evolution of her plastic language, which starts from geometric abstraction and the construction of volumes to transform materials such as rusted agricultural machinery into elements of reflection.
The exhibition includes works like the 'Alfil' series, inspired by the chess piece, which explores verticality and diagonal movement through drawings and collages. There are also pieces that reinterpret landscapes that marked the artist: the cliffs of Tenerife, the Andalusian fields, the Mediterranean coast, and the mountains of the Almijara range.
The exhibition serves as a posthumous tribute to Morales, who passed away in 2016, and allows visitors to immerse themselves in her creative process. The works, some of large format, demonstrate her ability to transform rusted iron into sculptures that oscillate between the abstract and the figurative, with surfaces that are sometimes left to natural rust and at other times covered in paint.
Nerja Museum, located in Plaza de España, is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 17:00 to 20:00. Admission is free until capacity is reached.
