The Malaga municipality celebrates the 29th edition of Raisin Day this Sunday, September 20, with free tastings of migas and flamenco performances. The institutional event will present this year's awards.
The Borge celebrates this Sunday, September 20, the twenty-ninth edition of Raisin Day, a day when 5,000 bags of muscat grapes and 1,000 litres of wine will be distributed among visitors, according to Diario Sur. The programme will kick off in the morning with the opening of the Bandolero Gallery, a parade by the San Gabriel Musical Group, and the setup of tasting stalls.
Live demonstrations of traditional tasks will begin in the Plaza de la Constitución with the picking, sifting, and filling of baskets weighing over 30 kilos. The route will continue to the Plaza del Pocillo, accompanied by the Panda de Verdiales de El Borge, featuring the laying out on drying racks, a muleteer representation, and the pressing of the grapes.
After the institutional event, a free gastronomic tasting will be offered with 800 servings of migas, potato salad, and cured meats made in the municipality. In the afternoon, the flamenco evening will feature performances by Malabares, Dani Peña, Crespo Zapata, and Jesús Méndez.
During the official event, the El Borge Town Hall will present this edition's awards. The recognition as Godfather of Raisin Day goes to Emilio Alba Conejo; Francisco Fernández Marín will be named Alborgeño of the Year; Concepción Fernández García and María del Carmen González Pardo will receive the award in Defence of the Raisin; the group Plan A will be distinguished in Defence of Tourism; the healthcare worker Cristóbal Jiménez García for Service and Commitment to El Borge; and the Almenaras Association for European Cooperation and Local Development.
The cultivation of muscat grapes in the Axarquía supports around 2,000 families and employs about 800 producers working on approximately 1,700 hectares of vineyards. The FAO recognised this production system in April 2018 as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS).
The event will take place on Sunday, September 20, in El Borge, with free access to the tasting stalls and scheduled activities from the morning.
