Barón calls on the Government to control borders and warns that municipalities cannot bear the migration crisis

The mayor of Antequera, Manolo Barón, asks the Executive to assume its responsibilities in immigration and shows solidarity with Ceuta following the death of nearly a hundred people.

The mayor of Antequera, Manolo Barón, has demanded this Thursday that the Government of Spain fully exercise the powers attributed to it by the Constitution regarding immigration and border control. The mayor warns that ineffective management ultimately shifts its consequences to the autonomous communities and, eventually, to the municipalities.

Barón has lamented that Spain has experienced the most serious episode in its history regarding migration policy management, with the death of nearly a hundred people at the border. In his view, this tragedy highlights the need for a serious, orderly, effective migration policy capable of protecting lives, ensuring border security, and combating human trafficking mafias.

The mayor has conveyed, on behalf of the Antequera City Council and all Antequerans, the city's solidarity with the Autonomous City of Ceuta. He has also announced written support for its president, Juan Jesús Vivas, in recognition of the efforts of its institutions, the State Security Forces and Corps, and public servants working to address this situation.

“We want President Vivas and all Ceutíes to know that they are not alone. Antequera acknowledges the enormous effort that Ceuta is making in defense of the border of Spain and Europe,” Barón stated.

Manolo Barón reminds that border control is an exclusive competence of the State and warns that “municipalities cannot become the final destination of decisions made without planning, without institutional coordination, and without the necessary funding.”

In this sense, he emphasizes that Antequera will continue to act responsibly and with respect for the dignity of all people, but demands that the Government fully assume its responsibilities and not shift the consequences of a migration policy whose direction corresponds exclusively to the State onto local entities.

Finally, the mayor has called for a migration policy “serious, orderly, effective, and responsible”, based on respect for legality, the protection of human life, the defense of borders, and cooperation between administrations. He reiterates that the Antequera City Council will always defend the interests of the city and demand that each administration exercise the powers attributed to it by the Constitution and the laws.
