The renovation of Santa María la Vieja street, in the San Juan neighbourhood of Antequera, has completed its second phase with an investment of €350,000 and 80 contracts.
The City Council of Antequera has announced the completion of the second phase of the comprehensive renovation works on Santa María la Vieja street, one of the longest and busiest roads in the San Juan neighbourhood. The project, part of the Agricultural Employment Promotion Programme (PFEA), has involved an investment of nearly €350,000 and has allowed for the hiring of 80 workers.
The Mayor of Antequera, Manolo Barón, visited the area on Thursday alongside the Deputy Mayor for Works and Maintenance, Teresa Molina; the Councillor for Citizen Cooperation, Alberto Arana; and representatives from the San Juan Neighbourhood Association, led by its president, Yiya Rodríguez.
The works have affected a stretch of approximately 80 metres in length, connecting the access road to Antequera with the area around the Portichuelo square. Urban infrastructures have been completely renewed, including pipelines, conduits, connections, and the sewage network, part of which was over fifty years old and in considerable disrepair.
The intervention has been completed with new paving, a strip of cobblestones, non-slip granite tiles, and the creation of a single platform to improve accessibility and facilitate pedestrian transit. The mayor highlighted that Santa María la Vieja is one of the most significant streets in the neighbourhood and thanked the neighbourhood association for their collaboration, which has conveyed “reasonable, well-reasoned proposals that can be implemented.”
A third and final phase remains pending, which is already budgeted and projected for inclusion in the next PFEA. The president of the neighbourhood association, Yiya Rodríguez, expressed her satisfaction with the outcome and assured that “we continue to work to improve the quality of life for the residents of the San Juan neighbourhood.”
