The comprehensive renovation works of the Alameda de Andalucía begin this Tuesday, September 15, with a planned duration of 16 months. The first phase, lasting four months, will eliminate traffic from the Constitution Square towards Infante Don Fernando.
The Alameda de Andalucía in Antequera starts to change this Tuesday September 15. The mayor, Manolo Barón, along with deputy mayors Antonio García Mendoza (Security and Traffic) and Teresa Molina (Works), presented on Monday in San Luis Square the traffic reorganisation that will accompany the comprehensive renovation of this road. The project is divided into four phases and has an initial forecast of 16 months.
The first phase will last about four months and will focus on the section between the San Luis building and Merecillas Street. The project will renew one of the main entrances and exits of the city and continues the improvements already made in San Sebastián Square and Infante Don Fernando Street.
The main change will be the establishment of a one-way traffic system in the affected section of the Alameda, from San Luis towards Constitution Square and Puerta de Estepa. The opposite direction, from Constitution Square to Infante Don Fernando, will be eliminated.
During this first phase, Cantareros Street will not have an exit towards the Alameda via San Luis. Vehicles coming from Madre de Dios will be able to continue to Toronjo Street, which they must follow. To facilitate the exit for residents and users of the garages on Estudillo Street, the direction of the section of Cantareros between Estudillo and Toronjo will be temporarily reversed: vehicles coming from Estudillo will be able to turn left onto Cantareros and then turn left again to exit via Toronjo. The new arrangement will be signposted.
Large vehicles that cannot access Infante Don Fernando via other routes must do so via Lucena Street. The plan includes adapting urban elements to facilitate turns in the area around San Agustín Square and at the intersection of Santa Clara with Cruz Blanca.
“A little patience”
The mayor has asked residents and users of public roads for “a little patience” and understanding regarding the inconveniences that such a large-scale operation will cause on one of the city's main arteries. Barón emphasised the need to respect traffic and parking regulations, paying special attention to streets like Santa Clara, Porterías, and Cruz Blanca, which will bear part of the alternative traffic.
The urban bus service will continue with temporary modifications to lines 1 and 2. A provisional stop will be set up at the corner of Lucena Street with Rodaljarros. On Line 1, heading to La Verónica-Hospital, buses will run from Puerta de Estepa via Porterías, Cruz Blanca, and Lucena, stopping next to Rodaljarros before continuing along Infante Don Fernando towards the Hospital. In the direction of Hospital-La Verónica, large vehicles will go from Calzada via Santa Clara and Cruz Blanca, using the roundabout on the Córdoba road to access Lucena; minibuses will do so from Calzada via Diego Ponce and Lucena. Both will use the provisional stop next to Rodaljarros and continue along Infante Don Fernando, Campillo Alto, Porterías, Health Centre, Paseo García del Olmo, and Sagrado Corazón before proceeding to Puerta de Estepa and La Verónica.
The Line 2 Circular will also adapt its route to avoid the construction section, using Plaza de Castilla to connect to Avenida de la Legión. From the area of Fresca and Calzada Streets, it will continue via Diego Ponce and Lucena, with a provisional stop next to Rodaljarros before proceeding along Infante Don Fernando.
The Security and Traffic Area and the Local Police have coordinated measures with the urban transport company and with school transport companies. Affected school routes will be adapted via alternative roads such as Santa Clara and Cruz Blanca, avoiding the construction section of the Alameda. ADIPA (for the collection of recyclable materials) and establishments on Infante Don Fernando Street that receive supplies with large vehicles have also been informed to coordinate their access and supply tasks.
During the first few days, and especially throughout the first week, the Local Police will reinforce the monitoring of the new arrangement, paying attention to the direction changes, turning points, and public and school transport routes to facilitate drivers' adaptation.
The mayor has recommended checking detailed route information on the Urbano Antequera website and staying updated on the website and social media of the City Council, where mobility news and changes for the following phases will be communicated.
