The Diputación de Málaga is rolling out an intense cultural programme in the Antequera region. Highlights include the flamenco festival in Alameda, the Emigrant Festival in Humilladero, and a concert by Diego Valdivia in Sierra de Yeguas.
The Antequera region is preparing for a week packed with culture, featuring offerings that range from the purest flamenco to contemporary circus. The Diputación de Málaga has organised an agenda that, from July 27 to August 2, will travel through various municipalities in the area with activities for all audiences.
The main event comes in the form of flamenco. Alameda will host the fourth edition of the 'Alameda, the North of Paradise' Festival, which will take place on July 31 and August 1 at the Municipal Pavilion starting at 10:00 PM. The first day will feature performances by students and teachers from the XI International Flamenco Camp of CEULAJ-INJUVE, an initiative that brings together young artists from various backgrounds. The Municipal Dance School of Alameda will also participate.
On August 1, it will be the turn of the Antonio de Verónica Flamenco Company and Saray Cortés, who will present a show that combines dance, singing, and music to showcase the expressive power of flamenco. The festival aims to bring this art closer to locals and visitors, blending training, tradition, and spectacle.
Humilladero, for its part, will celebrate the 40th edition of the Emigrant Flamenco Festival on July 31. It will take place at 11:30 PM at the Municipal Pool, featuring the performance of the Sevillian dancer Adela Campallo and her flamenco group. Campallo, considered one of the most recognised figures in the current scene, will present a show that combines strength, elegance, and respect for tradition. Her career on major national and international stages speaks for itself.
Flamenco is not the only offering. On July 31, at 11:30 PM, the Plaza de Andalucía in Sierra de Yeguas will host a concert by Diego Valdivia, presenting 'Aromas del Sur' in trio format. The audience will enjoy covers of soundtracks such as 'Game of Thrones', 'Interstellar', or 'The Last of the Mohicans', alongside original compositions inspired by Andalusian cities.
Live music will also reach Algatocín. The group Electroduendes will perform on July 31 at 10:30 PM in the Alameda de Andalucía, as part of the town's Cultural Week. They will offer covers of major hits from Spanish pop.
Contemporary circus has its place in Algatocín with the show 'Ursitoare', by artist Eva Escudier. It will take place on July 30 at 10:00 PM in La Alameda. Inspired by the mythological figure of the Ursitoare (fate fairies from Romanian tradition), the performance combines aerial acrobatics on fabrics, dance, and gestural theatre. It invites reflection on destiny, freedom, and the ability to transform one's own path.
For children, Casarabonela offers the show 'Cantolandia' by Timbleque Animación on July 31 at 8:00 PM in the town square. The story follows 'Pipipecas', a girl who fears falling asleep due to her fear of monsters. In her dream, she travels to a magical world called 'Musilandia', where she meets numerous characters.
In the realm of Festivals of Tourist Singularity, Alhaurín de la Torre celebrates the Gastronomic Festival of Zapata from July 31 to August 2. This festival, declared of Tourist Singularity by the Diputación, has its origins in the 1960s, coinciding with the feast of Our Lady of the Assumption. In 1990, the first gastronomy competition was organised, with the peculiarity that the dishes are shared with the public. Currently, the typical dishes are paella cooked over a wood fire and Málaga-style tripe, with the main dessert being watermelon grown in the neighbourhood.
Finally, Benalauría is preparing for its Moors and Christians festival on August 2. Following tradition, the first Sunday of August recreates the Mudéjar rebellion of the 15th century in the Serranía de Ronda. The representation unfolds through the town: a Moorish party arrives, loots the temple, and kidnaps the patron saint, Saint Dominic of Guzmán. The Christians begin the rescue and capture the children of the Moorish military leader, managing to recover the church and the saint. The epilogue is an elegy of the qáid for the land he must leave behind.
With this programme, the Diputación de Málaga seeks to energise the cultural life of the municipalities in the Antequera region, offering options for all tastes and ages during the last days of July and the first days of August.
