The municipality of Sierra de Yeguas has inaugurated a new day centre for the elderly, resulting from a grant of €744,352 managed by the Junta of Andalusia. The Andalusian Government delegate in Málaga, Patricia Navarro, highlighted the importance of these facilities, which will be able to accommodate 24 users.
Investment in dependency care
Navarro mentioned that, in total, the Junta of Andalusia has allocated nearly €19 million for the construction and renovation of day centres and residences in the province of Málaga. Among the 14 selected projects, there are six for residential centres and eight for day centres. This financial injection will allow for a total investment of €25.7 million.
The grants, coming from European funds, are designed to improve resources dedicated to the elderly and people with disabilities, in a context where the population is aging. The delegate explained that these funds will allow for the creation of 620 new places in Málaga.
Improvements in the service network
The assistant mentioned that this expansion of centres is accompanied by an increase in funding for the dependency care system. In June, the Governing Council authorised a new social concert that provides for more than 26,000 places for residential care and day centres, with a budget exceeding €776 million for the period 2026-2028.
Currently, the province of Málaga has more than 7,800 places in 188 care centres. Since 2019, nearly 800 new places have been created, in contrast to figures from previous administrations. Additionally, there has been a 4.5% increase in the price per place in the centres, as part of a service improvement policy.
The inauguration of this day centre aligns with the efforts of the Junta of Andalusia to improve dependency care and demand greater funding from the Government of Spain, which currently has a debt of €6 billion with the autonomous community in this area.
