The staff of the municipal company Litosa will vote this Wednesday in an urgent assembly on whether to maintain the planned strike from September 25 to 29 during the San Miguel fair. The conflict arises from the process of privatisation of the service, valued at 168.7 million euros.
More than 300 workers of Litosa, the public cleaning and waste collection company of Torremolinos, are called this Wednesday, September 23, to an urgent assembly to decide whether to maintain or postpone the strike called during the San Miguel fair. If confirmed, the strike would extend from 00:00 hours on September 25 to 23:59 on the 29th, according to Diario Sur.
The origin of the conflict is the process of privatisation of the service, whose contract is valued at 168.7 million euros and for which offers have already been received. The works council argues that the terms of reference foresee services far inferior to those provided by Litosa and that, starting from the second year, the future contractor will be able to reorganise jobs, which they believe opens the door to layoffs. They also reject the division of the tender into two lots for tasks currently handled by the same staff.
In the assembly, union representatives will present the employees with the proposal they have received from the government team to unlock the conflict. The meeting between both parties took place this Tuesday at the proposal of the Mayor's office, with no details of the negotiation being disclosed. Municipal officials insist that all jobs will be maintained in accordance with the collective agreement, signed shortly before the administrative phase of the tender began.
The mayor, Margarita del Cid, has sent an open letter to the workers in which she defends that the awarded company will be obliged to respect the agreement and to guarantee the necessary personnel to attend to the service. Del Cid states that the plans for modernising this activity will not mean "forgetting" those who have provided a basic service for years.
Municipal sources, in line with the technical reports issued in response to union claims, argue that aspects of the terms are being confused by equating the estimated equivalent workers set in the file (170.333) with the actual people who will ultimately carry out the work.
Last Sunday during the pilgrimage, there was already a concentration of Litosa workers as a prelude to the possible strike. The company’s payroll until the end of September also includes those hired for summer reinforcement.
