The Mijas Town Hall has made available to tourism entrepreneurs a 'big data' tool that allows real-time knowledge of 19 indicators in the sector. Mayor Ana Mata presented this resource at the 'Mijas Lab-Tourism Cluster'.

Tourism entrepreneurs in Mijas now have access to a tourism intelligence tool that allows them to know in real time up to 19 key indicators of the sector. The Mijas Town Hall, in collaboration with Tourism and Planning Costa del Sol of the Málaga Provincial Council, has launched this 'big data' resource with the aim of enabling local businesses to adapt their offerings to demand more accurately.

The Mayor of Mijas, Ana Mata, presented the tool this Wednesday during the third meeting of the 'Mijas Lab-Tourism Cluster', held at the beach bar El Capricho. Alongside her were the Councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez, and the Director of Analysis and Tourism Intelligence of Tourism and Planning Costa del Sol, Rafael Fuentes, who explained the advantages of this solution to the attendees.

What data does the tool offer?

The system allows for weekly updated information on accommodation offerings, the concentration of tourists in the area, hotel prices, employment in the sector, tourism businesses, and forecasts of arrivals at Málaga airport, among other indicators. This frequency provides tourism businesses with key information to prioritise strategies or redirect marketing or sales decisions.

According to municipal sources, tourist flows are very exposed to changes, so having constant information will help to take advantage of positive situations and navigate negative ones more reliably. The tool is already available to all tourism entrepreneurs in the municipality.

Concerns over the new Coast Regulation

During the meeting, the 'Mijas Lab-Tourism Cluster' also addressed the new General Coast Regulation proposed by the Spanish Government. Entrepreneurs expressed their concerns about the changes it could introduce in concessions, their area, and exploitation extensions.

The Councillor for Beaches, Daniel Gómez, informed attendees about the details of the text, which was already discussed in a Senate meeting on June 24 with the presence of councillors from coastal municipalities. The cluster agreed to demand that the Spanish Government suspend the draft regulatory project and resume dialogue with the autonomous communities, town halls, and affected sectors.

Security and new incorporations

The meeting also included the presence of members of the Local Police and the Guardia Civil, who intervened at the request of entrepreneurs regarding the surveillance of tourist areas, adjacent to golf courses and hotels in the municipality. Attendees positively valued the collaboration of the security forces.

On another note, the director of the Andalusian Centre for Comprehensive Training in Leisure Industries (CIO) Mijas, Raquel Hidalgo, communicated to the cluster the contribution of the organisation to congress tourism in Mijas, with its calendar of events and organisation of meetings. Finally, the 'Mijas Lab' approved the inclusion of the Caleña Association of Entrepreneurs and Traders (ACEC) as a new native member, represented by its president, Juan Antonio Gambero, and its secretary, Mariana Pérez.

The mayor welcomed the new group and offered the cooperation of the Mijas Town Hall to ensure that its activities are beneficial for the entire municipality. Tourism entrepreneurs in Mijas can now request access to the 'big data' tool through the Tourism Department.
