The Government Council of the Junta de Andalucía has appointed Ana María Corredera from Antequera as Deputy Minister of Artificial Intelligence, Digital Development and Public Administration, a newly created department that incorporates AI for the first time in the regional executive.

The Antequera native Ana María Corredera was appointed this Wednesday as Deputy Minister of Artificial Intelligence, Digital Development and Public Administration of the Junta de Andalucía, a newly created position that places the province of Málaga at the centre of the digital transformation of the regional government.

Corredera, who until now was Deputy Minister of Justice, Local Administration and Public Function, thus takes on the responsibility of leading the Andalusian strategy in artificial intelligence and administrative modernisation, under the supervision of Minister José Antonio Nieto.

A profile with extensive political experience

Born in Antequera in 1967, Ana María Corredera began her political career in 1990 within the Popular Party. With a degree in French Translation, she served as a councillor in the Antequera City Council during two periods: 1991-1994 and 2003-2008, and as a deputy in the Parliament of Andalucía from 1994 to 2015, where she acted as spokesperson in areas such as Social Services, Innovation and Health.

Her career also includes a stint at the Ministry of the Interior as an advisor in 2017, and in 2018 she took on the Technical Direction of Employment, European Resources and New Technologies at the Málaga Provincial Council. In 2019, she was appointed Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Sustainable Development, a position she held until July 2022, when she moved to the Deputy Ministry of Justice.

A pioneering department in the Andalusian administration

The new Deputy Ministry of Artificial Intelligence, Digital Development and Public Administration is a newly created department that, for the first time, incorporates artificial intelligence within the structure of the Andalusian executive. This move reflects the government of Juanma Moreno's commitment to digitalisation and administrative efficiency.

For the citizens of the province of Málaga, this appointment represents a direct link to the regional innovation policies. Corredera, as an Antequera native, is well aware of the needs of the territory, particularly regarding digital development and access to new technologies in rural areas.

“It is an honour to contribute from this new area to the modernisation of the Andalusian administration, with special attention to artificial intelligence as a tool to improve public services,” the new deputy minister stated in her first declaration after the appointment.

Twenty appointments in twelve ministries

The Government Council approved a total of twenty appointments of senior officials in twelve ministries this Wednesday, as part of the restructuring of the executive following Juanma Moreno's re-election and the agreement with Vox that places Manuel Gavira as vice president.

Among the positions filled are the deputy ministers of Tourism, Justice, Deregulation and Local Administration; Economy, Finance and European Funds; Education; Social Services, Families and Equality; Housing, Youth and Land Planning; Culture, Historical Heritage and Sport; Sustainability and Environment; Promotion and Mobility; and, of course, that of Artificial Intelligence.

For the people of Málaga, the presence of a figure from the province in this new department could translate into pilot projects for digitalisation in local administration, improvements in the management of online procedures or training initiatives in digital skills, especially in inland municipalities like Antequera.

The appointment of Corredera comes at a time when the Junta de Andalucía seeks to accelerate the digital transformation of its services, aiming to reduce bureaucracy and improve citizen attention. The new deputy minister will be tasked with coordinating AI and digital development policies across all ministries.

With this appointment, Antequera gains weight in the regional government, as Corredera is the only representative from the province of Málaga in the leadership of the new ministry. The residents of the region hope that her work will have a positive impact on the modernisation of local public services.
