The Málaga City Council has relaunched the tender for the repair of the roof of Atarazanas market, with a budget of 394,961 euros and a six-month timeframe.
The Commerce Area of the Málaga City Council has launched a new tender to repair the roof of Atarazanas market, after the previous tender, opened in October 2025, was left vacant. The aim is to prevent rainwater leaks that have repeatedly damaged the interior of the building.
An investment of nearly 395,000 euros for six months of work
The project, with a base budget of 394,961.69 euros, includes a targeted reform of the roof without altering the architectural configuration of the building, which is protected as a Cultural Heritage Asset (BIC). Interested companies can submit their bids until August 4, 2026.
The works will be carried out within a six-month timeframe and will take place in the afternoons, outside the market's opening hours, to avoid interfering with commercial activity. This measure aims to minimise disruptions to the more than 50 stalls operating in the venue.
A history of incidents since the last rehabilitation
The comprehensive rehabilitation of the market was completed in 2010, but since then various problems have arisen. The most recent occurred in July 2025, when one of the panes of the historic stained glass door — made up of 108 panels representing monuments of the city — fell off. Fortunately, it did not cause any injuries, although it did result in heritage damage.
Rain has caused dampness on several occasions, affecting both the structure and the daily activities of the market. The City Council emphasises the urgency of the intervention to preserve this emblematic building in the historic centre, whose Arabic-style door has been protected since 1979.
“It is a necessary action to ensure the safety and good condition of the market, a key space for the city's commerce,” municipal sources state.
Atarazanas, a BIC in the heart of Málaga
Atarazanas market is the only municipal market declared BIC alongside the old Wholesale Market (now the Contemporary Art Centre). Its door, which was one of the entrances to the sea from the walls of Málaga, has been catalogued since 1979 and is part of the protection of the historic complex.
The roof reform is part of the improvement plan for municipal markets, which also includes actions in other facilities. Local residents and traders hope that this time the tender will be successful and that the works will begin as soon as possible to put an end to the leaks that tarnish the experience of shopping in this beloved market.
