Virgen de la Peña square in Mijas Pueblo has hosted this Wednesday the celebration of Tourist Day, an event organized by the Town Hall through the Tourism Department to recognise those who choose it as a destination. The event kicked off at 12:00 hours with a flamenco show and continued at 13:30 with a free tasting of paella and sangria.
The event coincided with the artisan market that takes place every Wednesday in the same square, bringing together music, gastronomy, and crafts in one space. The Town Hall includes the event in its regular tourist calendar.
The Councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez, emphasised the importance of the sector in the local economy.
“We are a municipality on the Costa del Sol that is predominantly tourist-oriented, and a very important part of our economic and business fabric depends on this activity. That is why it is important to celebrate this day and thank those who visit us for continuing to choose Mijas as a destination.”
Jerez also pointed out that the goal of his department is to spread activity throughout the twelve months and not concentrate it in summer.
“We need to continue promoting Mijas abroad to attract visitors all year round. The challenge is especially in winter: we want our hotels, restaurants, taxis, shops, and golf courses to maintain their activity even outside the high season, as many jobs and a fundamental part of the municipality's economy depend on this.”
Tourist Day has been celebrated for years in Mijas and combines flamenco, gastronomy, and crafts, three elements linked to the municipality's offerings. The Tourism Department works on the external promotion of Mijas as a year-round destination, relying on its coastline, natural surroundings, culture, gastronomy, and golf, in addition to its urban area.
