The Nerja athlete receives the Gold Tourist Shield at the 20th edition of Tourist Day, held in the gardens of the Nerja Cave. The event also recognises seven entrepreneurs, groups, and programmes for their promotion of the municipality.
The Nerja athlete María Narváez received the title of Tourist Ambassador of Nerja 2026 and the Gold Tourist Shield this Friday during the 20th edition of Tourist Day, which took place in the gardens of the Nerja Cave.
The recognition highlights her sporting career in national and international competitions and her role in promoting the name of Nerja outside the municipality, according to the Town Hall.
During the same event, the 2026 Tourist Distinctions were awarded to the entrepreneurs of Plaza Tutti Frutti; to the Pastoral of the Neighbours' Association of Las Protegidas; to Francisco Navas «Paco el Churretero», posthumously; to former Nerja Cave worker Antonio Montesino; to María del Carmen Morillo, representing local shop assistants; to video creator and entrepreneur José Cánovas; and to the Canal Sur programme «A Toda Costa».
The mayor, José Alberto Armijo, congratulated the awardees and emphasised the importance of the sector in the municipality. “We all agree that tourism is one of the great strengths of our town, the main industry, an undeniable engine of employment, wealth, and opportunities. Therefore, now more than ever, we must reaffirm our commitment to sustainable, quality tourism that generates well-being, and moreover, do so by promoting, through public-private collaboration, a tourism model that benefits all Nerjeños and Mareños,” he declared.
The day continues in the afternoon at the Balcón de Europa, with dance performances starting at 18:30 hours. At 21:30 hours, the music moves to Plaza de España, where Justito a Tiempo and Merche will perform as the star act.
