Ronda to approve its new urban planning before the end of the year

The Ronda City Council plans to initially approve the new urban planning before the end of 2026, replacing the 1990s PGOU.

The Ronda City Council plans to initially approve the new urban planning before the end of 2026. The document will replace the PGOU in force since the 1990s and will integrate the POU and the PGOM.

The Ronda City Council will initially approve the new urban planning for the city before the end of this year. This was announced by the mayor, Mari Paz Fernández, in a working meeting with the councillor for Urban Planning, Jesús Vázquez, and the document's author, Juan Carlos García de los Reyes.

The current General Urban Planning Plan (PGOU) dates back to the 1990s. The renewal will integrate two instruments: the Municipal Planning Plan (POU), which regulates urban land, and the General Municipal Planning Plan (PGOM), focused on rustic land.

After the initial approval in plenary, a public information period of 45 working days will open to consult the document and submit objections. In parallel, environmental processing will begin with sectoral reports, and a final proposal will be developed that must be ratified by the Ministry of Environment of the Junta de Andalucía before its final approval in plenary.

In the meeting on Wednesday, the final decisions were made regarding the POU: review of building ordinances, square meters buildable by area, number of floors, occupation of urban voids, expected growth, need for public housing, and new roads. For the PGOM, the most protected areas and those of lesser natural value where Ronda can grow were determined.

“We continue to fulfil commitments, the greatest milestones in urban planning in the last 50 years in Ronda. We already approved the so-called protection plan for the historic ensemble, in force, for which we were awarded by the Junta; and now we are facing the renewal of what is currently called PGOU,” said Fernández.

The process began in 2019 with a participation procedure that led to the Local Action Plan and the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan. The author, García de los Reyes, noted that the needs of the residents of Ronda have changed over three decades and that the renewal is urgent.
