In recent weeks, two crimes in Antequera and Mijas have raised the number of fatalities this year, while in the same coastal town, the National Police managed to rescue a woman who had been subjected to extreme violence for two years. This surge has prompted the central government to convene a crisis committee for next Tuesday.
The Cordoban Platform Against Violence Towards Women has organised a gathering for tonight at 20:30 at the monument fountain dedicated to the beauty of Cordoban women in Plaza de Colón, in front of the La Merced palace. The event aims to demonstrate social rejection of the recent gender-related murders recorded in the country, with particular focus on those that occurred in the province of Málaga.
One of the most recent cases is that of a 29-year-old woman murdered in Antequera, whose death adds to that of a 45-year-old woman in Alameda de la Sagra (Toledo), who was killed in front of three of her four children, one of whom was a minor. Additionally, a third woman, aged 30, who had been hospitalised since February with burns covering 50% of her body, passed away on the 18th due to injuries sustained in an attack carried out by two hitmen on the orders of her husband in Sevilla la Nueva (Madrid).
In the province of Málaga, July has been particularly tragic. In Mijas, a man killed his partner and her daughter in an incident that shocked the town. In that same locality, the National Police rescued a woman who had been a victim of sexual, psychological, and physical violence by her husband, who had kept her confined at home for two years.
Data from the Government Delegation against Gender Violence reflects an alarming increase: so far in 2026, there have been 31 fatalities from gender-related crimes, a figure significantly higher than the 22 women killed in the same period last year. This spike has led the central government to convene a crisis committee, which will meet next Tuesday, the 28th, to analyse the situation and seek measures to address it.
The gathering tonight in Córdoba adds to other civic initiatives demanding a more robust response against gender violence.
