The Marbella City Council is processing specific urban regulations so that hotels can continue to benefit from the 10% increase in buildability allowed by the Junta's hotel modernisation decree. The measure aims to maintain a framework that has mobilised nearly 300 million euros in the city.
The Marbella City Council has held a meeting with the Association of Hotel Entrepreneurs of the Costa del Sol (AEHCOS) to discuss the new specific urban regulations for the tourism sector promoted by the City Council. The goal is to extend the advantages outlined in the hotel modernisation decree approved by the Junta de Andalucía after the pandemic.
The mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, explained that this initiative seeks to continue an instrument that has favoured the renovation of numerous establishments and has helped strengthen the competitiveness of the destination. "We have always supported our hotel sector, whose owners and managers have bet on Marbella to make that leap in quality that allows us to remain a tourist reference," she valued.
The mayor, who was accompanied at the meeting by the councillor for the sector, José Eduardo Díaz, recalled that the regional government approved regulations after the COVID health crisis that allowed hotels to increase their buildability by up to 10 percent to undertake modernisation projects over a period of three years.
"In Marbella, this measure has meant an investment of nearly 300 million euros, a figure that reflects the sector's confidence in our city and its commitment to excellence," Muñoz pointed out. The mayor highlighted that thanks to this regulatory framework, numerous establishments have raised their category, incorporated new services, and improved their facilities.
"We understand that it has been a very positive initiative and we believe that the new specific regulation should include the benefits outlined in that decree, because often three years are not enough to design, process, and execute projects of this magnitude"
Muñoz reiterated the municipal commitment to an activity that constitutes one of the main economic engines of the municipality. "From Marbella, we will continue to offer all possible facilities for hotels to keep generating employment, wealth, and opportunities, always with the support of the City Council," she affirmed.
For his part, the president of AEHCOS, José Luque, expressed his satisfaction with an initiative he described as innovative. "We are very pleased with this regulation, which is very novel," he emphasised.
The sector representative recalled that the decree promoted during the pandemic was fundamental in conveying confidence to tourism entrepreneurs. "At that time, it was important to send a message that there was a future and that it was necessary to invest to differentiate, renew, and remain competitive," he indicated. Luque highlighted that the municipal proposal will allow those establishments that could not develop their projects within the initial deadline to now have a new opportunity to do so.
