The town of Málaga recently hosted a visit from Laura Soto, the territorial delegate for Agriculture, Fishing, Water and Rural Development, who presented the emergency actions for the repair of riverbeds in Almargen and Cañete la Real. These actions are being carried out due to the damage caused by heavy rains that affected the area earlier this year.
Investment in emergency works
The total investment allocated for these works amounts to €2,918,436, aiming to recover the hydraulic section of the riverbeds and reinforce them to face future flooding episodes. This effort is part of the Andalucía Actúa Plan, which has a total budget of €35.3 million for interventions in the riverbeds of 38 municipalities across the province of Málaga.
In this context, Laura Soto emphasised the importance of these works, which seek to address the urgent needs raised by local councils. The actions focus on restoring the normality of the riverbeds following the storms that hit the region between November 2025 and February 2026.
Details of the interventions
During her visit, Soto met with the mayor of Cañete la Real, Andrés Morón, and the mayor of Almargen, Mari Carmen Romero, to discuss the details of the development of these interventions. Together, they visited the sites where the works are being carried out.
The actions in Cañete la Real involve an investment of €2,622,660.99 and cover 18 stretches of streams in the municipality. The investment in the Arenas stream exceeds €400,000, focusing on recovering its hydraulic section to protect the riverbed and surrounding agricultural plots.
Meanwhile, in Almargen, emergency works are being executed with an estimated cost of €295,775.47. This intervention includes work on the Salado stream and the Almargen river, and is part of a larger package that also encompasses other municipalities such as Ardales and Campillos.
These repair initiatives aim not only to restore damaged infrastructures but also to improve the stability of the banks and reduce the risk of future damage to agricultural plots.
