Nearly two hundred people gathered last Friday at Lew Hoad to support the annual gala of the AFA Fuengirola-Mijas Costa association, which this year will allocate the funds raised to equip its new centre in Boquetillo, Fuengirola.
The AFA Fuengirola-Mijas Costa association held its annual gala last Friday at Lew Hoad, an event that brought together nearly two hundred people for a charitable evening. The funds raised will be used to equip the new centre that the organisation will soon open in Boquetillo, Fuengirola, as confirmed by the association's director, Rocío Segovia.
“This year we will raise funds for the new centre we are going to open in Boquetillo, Fuengirola, as we need to cover all the necessary equipment and, since it is a large expense, it will be very beneficial for us to allocate this year's funds to this centre,” Segovia explained during the event.
The gala, held every summer, is made possible thanks to the solidarity of individuals and entities that collaborate with the work AFA Fuengirola-Mijas Costa does with Alzheimer’s patients and their families. The association has been raising awareness of this disease for 23 years and bringing its therapies to the public.
“Unfortunately, it is true that the number of people requesting services is increasing, we are currently serving over 120 families, and there is a waiting list; it is also true that we are increasingly attending to younger individuals because it is very important that treatment begins early to maintain quality of life for as long as possible and to promote greater autonomy,” Segovia detailed.
The event was attended by representatives from the Mijas Town Hall government team, which regularly collaborates with the association. The councillor for Social Inclusion, Mari Francis Alarcón (PP), highlighted the municipal support: “Although they are based in Fuengirola, they have many patients from Mijas who go to this centre daily, and we, from the Town Hall, collaborate with them by granting an annual subsidy.”
The new centre in Boquetillo will allow the association to expand its capacity to care for the over 120 families it currently serves, which includes a waiting list. The opening is expected in the coming months, and the necessary equipment includes furniture, therapeutic materials, and resources for daily activities.
The annual gala has established itself as a key event in the region's charitable calendar, and this year it has reinforced the community's commitment to the fight against Alzheimer’s. Attendees enjoyed an evening filled with performances, raffles, and moments of togetherness.
For the residents of Fuengirola and Mijas, the opening of the new centre will represent a significant advancement in the care of Alzheimer’s patients and their families, as it will help reduce waiting lists and offer more personalised therapies. The association hopes the centre will be operational before the end of the year.
The director of AFA Fuengirola-Mijas Costa thanked all attendees and collaborators for their support and reminded everyone that the association still needs help to cover all expenses. “Every little bit counts so we can continue offering our services,” concluded Segovia.
