Over 1,000 runners from 50 nationalities have already signed up for the Estepona Marathon 'Garden of the Costa del Sol', which will take place on October 11. The event, which runs along the coastal route, aims to provide a premium experience.
The first edition of the Estepona Marathon 'Garden of the Costa del Sol' has already surpassed the milestone of 1,000 registrations. With just over two months to go until the event, scheduled for October 11, the organisers have confirmed that more than 1,000 runners, both men and women, have formalised their participation in this new race that aspires to establish itself on the international calendar.
The profile of the registrants reflects a notable international appeal. According to data provided by the organisers, more than 50 nationalities are represented, with a particularly significant presence of runners from Great Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, and Ireland. The proximity of the airports in Malaga and Gibraltar, as well as the tourist allure of the Costa del Sol, largely explain this foreign interest.
However, the marathon has also resonated with the national audience. 21% of the registrants come from outside Andalusia, with 6.1% arriving from the Community of Madrid. The bulk of the participation, however, is from Andalusia: 60% of the national runners are from Malaga, demonstrating local support for this sporting initiative.
The course, measuring 42 kilometres and 195 meters, runs largely along the coastal corridor of Estepona, a coastal stretch that the organisers describe as one of the most spectacular in southern Europe. The event is presented as an experiential marathon, away from the large crowds that characterise other mass races, with the aim of providing runners with a more curated and personalised experience.
The Estepona Town Hall is promoting this first edition, which is sponsored by the Commonwealth of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol, Azata, Taraje, and the Ikos Hotel. Companies such as Hidralia, Urbaser, Carrefour, Renault Rombosol, Restaurante El Cielo, Grupo Trocadero, and Afar4 are also collaborating.
Registrations are still open through the official race website, www.maratoncostadelsol.com. The cost to participate in the full marathon is 60 euros, while the half marathon costs 35 euros. The organisers recommend that interested parties do not delay their registration, given the pace of bookings.
For local runners, the event represents an opportunity to experience a route that runs through one of the most unique environments in the province. Additionally, the coincidence with the Pilar holiday (October 12) may facilitate the participation of visitors wishing to combine sport and tourism on the Costa del Sol.
The Estepona Marathon 'Garden of the Costa del Sol' is born with the ambition of becoming a reference in the calendar of long-distance races in Spain, betting on quality over quantity. The response from runners, both local and international, seems to endorse that bet.
