The private university UAX Mare Nostrum will offer a degree in Medicine in Málaga starting from the 2027/2028 academic year, as confirmed by its rector. The institution begins its second year with over 1,300 students and the campus on Avenida Imperio Argentina already completed.
The degree in Medicine will be taught in Málaga from the 2027/2028 academic year by UAX Mare Nostrum, the private university that is celebrating its first anniversary in the city. This was confirmed to Diario Sur by its rector, Luis Couceiro, who identifies this degree as the main academic novelty of the institution.
The decision responds to the pressure of demand: this academic year, the cut-off mark for Medicine at the University of Málaga has been set at 13.12 out of 14, with a number of applicants far exceeding the available places. “We are very pleased to be able to offer Medicine in Málaga because we see that there is a real need. There is a high demand not only from students but also from the healthcare sector, which has vacancies to fill and cannot find enough professionals,” explains Couceiro.
Medicine will join the offerings of the Faculty of Health, which already teaches Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Biomedicine since last academic year. This year, the degree in Nutrition and Dietetics will also be added. The university completes its catalogue with faculties in Sports (Physical Activity and Sports Sciences and Physiotherapy), Business & Tech (Artificial Intelligence and Business Analytics), and Art and Design (Video Game Design). In master's programmes, the new addition is in Sports, Culture, and Entertainment Management.
The rector gives a positive assessment of the first year: “More than 500 students enrolled with us in the first year, which is a tremendous success for us.” Couceiro highlights that degrees like Pharmacy and Dentistry were not previously offered in the province: “Until now, students had to leave the province to study them, which often leads to them building their lives elsewhere. For us, it is gratifying that talent remains in Málaga.”
This academic year starts with over 1,300 students, around 30% of whom come from abroad, many from Central Europe. “They come because Málaga is synonymous with internationalisation; it is synonymous with progress, innovation, and technology, and they want to be here,” states Couceiro. The faculty consists of around a hundred professors, including doctors from the business sector.
The second phase of the campus, located on Avenida Imperio Argentina, next to the Palacio de Deportes Martín Carpena, is already completed. Biotechnology laboratories, a virtual simulation hospital, and sports facilities with a fitness center, cross circuit, and beach volleyball courts have been inaugurated.
In its connection with the business fabric, the university is developing the UAX Makers model, with challenges from companies like Mercedes-Benz, Quirón Salud, and OWO Games. “Students from Physiotherapy and Computing have developed a haptic vest that integrates anatomy and technology,” details Couceiro.
