The northern road of Plaza de la Victoria will be closed to traffic from July 1 until mid-September due to the Lagunillas works. An alternative detour is established and the taxi stop changes location.
The Málaga City Council has announced the closure of the northern road of Plaza de la Victoria starting Wednesday, July 1, a measure that will last until mid-September. The restriction is due to the fourth and final phase of the urban renewal works in the Lagunillas area, a project aimed at revitalising this part of the city centre.
The closure directly affects vehicles needing access to Calle Altozano. To minimise inconvenience, the City Council has designed an alternative route that runs from Calle Cristo de la Epidemia, down Mendizábal, Puerto Parejo, and Párroco Ruiz Furest, until reaching the intersection with Altozano. Drivers are advised to plan their journeys in advance, especially during peak hours, as the Victoria, Capuchinos, and Lagunillas areas experience high traffic density due to residents, businesses, and connections to the city centre.
In addition to the detour, the taxi stop in Plaza de la Victoria is temporarily relocated to the northeast pavement of the same square, at the junction with Calle Ferrándiz. This temporary location will remain until the planned works in this phase are completed.
The works are part of a comprehensive revitalisation project for the Lagunillas area, awarded to the company Construcciones Lasor S.L. for an amount of €2,460,648.82 (including VAT) and with an execution period of 12 months. The actions focus on Calle Lagunillas, the Plaza de la Victoria itself, and Plaza Miguel de los Reyes, aiming to improve urban services, accessibility, and the appearance of the streets. Once completed, it is expected to enhance pedestrian traffic, reduce through traffic, and increase green areas, following the line of other previous interventions in the historic centre.
This phase is the culmination of a process that began years ago with the pedestrianisation of sections of Lagunillas and the creation of the Monkey Garden, a space that has already transformed part of the neighbourhood. The City Council hopes that, with the completion of these works, Lagunillas will establish itself as a friendlier and more sustainable environment.
For local residents and businesses, it is recommended to pay attention to the temporary signage and the official channels of the Mobility Area of the Málaga City Council, where updates on the status of the works and possible traffic changes will be published. The expectation is that the closure of the northern road will be lifted by mid-September, coinciding with the end of summer.
