The Parque del Agua at La Misericordia beach in Málaga has been closed for nine days. The city council is cleaning and waterproofing the water tank after several children fell ill with gastroenteritis.
Nine days after the preventive closure of the Parque del Agua in Málaga's La Misericordia beach, the facility remains closed as the city council carries out cleaning and repair works. The council decided to shut the park on June 19 after reports emerged that several children who had played there developed symptoms of gastroenteritis.
Work crews have been vaciando, limpiando e impermeabilizando el depósito (draining, cleaning, and waterproofing the tank), as well as reviewing the entire water pumping and treatment system. According to municipal sources, all these actions are strictly preventive, as there is no definitive evidence linking the park's water to the illness.
The children affected attended different schools in the area, prompting the council to act swiftly. The Servicio de Salud Pública (Public Health Service) has been analizando muestras de agua to determine whether the water was the source of the outbreak. The park will not reopen until the results are known and, if necessary, corrective measures are applied.
The Parque del Agua, situated along the Paseo Marítimo Antonio Banderas next to La Misericordia beach, offers nine play areas completely free of charge. It is a popular spot for families, especially during the summer months. A city spokesperson stated:
“We are taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of our visitors. We will announce the reopening as soon as the works are completed and the results from the health authorities are confirmed.”
As a point of comparison, similar water play areas in other Spanish coastal cities have occasionally been closed for routine maintenance, but closures due to health concerns are less common. The council has stressed that before each opening, the Área de Sostenibilidad Medioambiental carries out a thorough “puesta a punto” and hyperchlorination, followed by regular water quality checks in compliance with regulations.
For now, families planning to visit the park should check the official municipal channels for updates on the reopening. The council expects to announce a date soon, but no precise timeline has been given. Meanwhile, other free attractions along the Malagueta and Pedregalejo beaches remain operational.
