Málaga City Council has approved a second modification of the 2026 budget amounting to nearly 6 million euros. The largest allocations are for the road surfacing plan and adapting the working conditions of the municipal company Más Cerca.
Málaga City Council has greenlit a second modification of the municipal budget for 2026 for an amount of 5,978,360.66 euros. The funds, mainly derived from surpluses generated by rescheduling the start of several tenders, will be distributed among various areas to finance everything from road surfacing to the purchase of air conditioning equipment.
The largest allocation, of 1,680,000 euros, is assigned to Urban Planning. Of that amount, 1.65 million will be used to continue the road surfacing plan in districts, on roads with the highest traffic intensity, and in the city's industrial and business parks. These actions are part of the first phase of a contract that will be carried out over the next two years and involves a total investment of 14 million euros.
The remaining 30,000 euros from this allocation will fund a collaboration with the Association of Industrial and Commercial Parks of Málaga and Province (APOMA) to improve the visibility, modernisation, and sustainability of business spaces.
The second largest allocation, of 1,629,841.92 euros, corresponds to the municipal company Más Cerca. This contribution will allow for the adaptation of the working conditions of the staff to the collective agreement of the municipal workforce of Málaga City Council. The measure is adopted following a ruling issued in March 2024 by the Superior Court of Justice of Andalusia and a ruling from the Supreme Court in October 2025.
Operational Services will receive 491,921.22 euros. Of this, 305,377.16 euros will be allocated to cover the increased expenditure on water supply following the lifting of restrictions imposed during the drought. The increase in municipal consumption is related to the recovery of the use of showers on Málaga's beaches and the irrigation of green areas. The other 186,544.06 euros will allow for the purchase of air conditioning equipment for community centres, social services offices, libraries, and other municipal buildings.
The budget modification also finances other actions, such as equipment for firefighters, improvements in football fields, actions in municipal markets, cultural projects, traffic studies, cleaning services, and new SMS and WhatsApp alert tools.
The resources come mainly from surpluses generated by rescheduling the start of several investment and grant tenders, according to municipal sources.
With this modification, Málaga City Council aims to respond to urgent needs and commitments made, such as the labour adaptation of Más Cerca following the court ruling. Residents of the capital will particularly notice improvements in road surfacing and the reactivation of services such as showers on the beaches.
