Mahos anticipates a Málaga Fair similar to last year in revenue and hiring, although July has been 'somewhat below'. The sector is counting on August, its 'big week'.
The Málaga Hoteliers Association (Mahos) approaches the Málaga Fair, which will be held from August 15 to 22, with an optimistic outlook. Its president, Javier Frutos, has stated that the sector maintains “positive expectations” for these days, which are considered key for both revenue and hiring throughout the province.
“August is the peak month,” Frutos pointed out, highlighting that the Fair represents an opportunity to cater to “the enjoyment of both local audiences and visitors.” The sector hopes that this big week will compensate for a July that, as he acknowledged, “has been somewhat below last year.”
Despite this setback, the president of Mahos has assured that forecasts for August “will be similar to last year.” The uncertainty lies in how consumption will evolve, an aspect that has changed trend in recent months.
Frutos referred to a recent study indicating changes in consumption habits. “We are billing more, but because the upward trend in prices and the costs we are bearing also have an impact,” he explained. In other words, the increase in revenue does not necessarily translate to more customers, but rather to higher prices.
The sector is also closely monitoring tourist behaviour. “Overnight stays are increasing, and perhaps that’s where it’s said that the arriving visitor spends more,” Frutos indicated, although in the hospitality sector “what we are noticing is a change in trend.”
In the coming days, Málaga hoteliers expect the Fair to boost the local economy and generate a rise in employment, one of the aspects the sector values especially at this time.
