The Dominican priest passed away this Thursday in Jerez de la Frontera due to a head injury sustained from a fall while exiting a vehicle. He directed the Basilica of Perchel from 1990 to 2012.
The Dominican priest Fray Eugenio Ruiz Prieto has died this Thursday in Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz), where he had resided for years and practiced his ministry at the church of Santo Domingo. According to Diario Sur, the religious man suffered a blow to the head from a fall while exiting a vehicle, an injury from which he could not recover. He was over eighty years old.
Born in Villanueva de San Carlos (Ciudad Real), he was ordained a priest at the age of 23 in Granada, the city where he completed his theological training, which he finished at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas in Rome. Before arriving in Málaga, he was in charge of the major colleges of the Dominican order in Córdoba, Cádiz, and Granada.
In 1990, he was assigned to Málaga. There, he served as spiritual director for the brotherhoods of Dolores del Puente, Humillación, Mena, and Esperanza, and for 22 years, until 2012, he was the rector of the Basilica of the Archconfraternity of Paso and Esperanza, in the northern Perchel. He was also chaplain of the schools of the Marists and the Esclavas.
In 2012, the then bishop, Jesús Catalá, decided to relieve him of the position of rector following the departure of the Dominican order from the city due to a lack of vocations, after five centuries of almost continuous presence at the church of Santo Domingo.
