The Ronda City Council has awarded the three lots from the cork extraction campaign of the Montes de Propio for over 600,000 euros. A total of approximately 302,000 kilos of cork have been sold, with a company from Toledo and another from Portugal as the successful bidders.
The Ronda City Council has closed the sale of cork from the cork extraction campaign of the Montes de Propio with revenues exceeding 600,000 euros. The operation has been divided into three lots that total approximately 302,000 kilos of cork, according to the councillor responsible for Procurement, Jorge Fernández.
The first lot, of about 86,000 kilos, has been awarded to the Toledo company Antonio de María S. A., based in Talavera de la Reina, for 186,000 euros. This same company has also secured the third lot, of around 75,000 kilos, for 168,000 euros.
The second lot, the largest in volume, with about 140,000 kilos, has gone to a Portuguese company for 251,000 euros.
Fernández has assessed the outcome of the tender considering the situation of the sector, affected by drought, which has diminished the quality of the cork. The councillor has pointed out that this income has a dual aspect: on one hand, it feeds the municipal coffers and, on the other, it contributes to the maintenance of the mountains.
“At least 15% of the income obtained is reinvested in the forest management of these lands”
This percentage is allocated to thinning and improving the tree mass, maintaining paths and extraction routes, and implementing prevention and firefighting measures in the Montes de Propio, located in the Los Alcornocales Natural Park.
