The Club Nerja de Atletismo has made history at the U18 Spanish Championship, held in Castellón, by achieving nine medals and five finalist positions. This haul has secured them second place in the national championship points ranking, only surpassed by the host.
Gold and Andalucía Record for Cristóbal Díaz
The great joy for the Nerja team came from Cristóbal Díaz, who won the gold medal in the discus throw with a mark of 56.35 metres. Not only was this enough to win, but it also sets a new Andalucía record for the category and a personal best for the athlete.
The Nerja thrower thus outperformed his national rivals in a very competitive event, demonstrating a level that points to great achievements in the future.
Raquel Lobo, Double Silver and Elite Speed
The sprinter Raquel Lobo was another of the standout performers, winning two silver medals: in long jump with 6.08 metres and in the 100 metre hurdles with 13.73 seconds. Her versatility and speed make her one of the most solid prospects in Málaga athletics.
In a similar vein, Mario Herrera took silver in the 400 metres with a time of 47.93 seconds, while Sergio López was second in the triple jump with 14.77 metres. The men's 4x100 relay team, consisting of Salvador Garrido, Javier Polanco, Fabián Serrano, and Joel Wilson, also climbed to the second step of the podium with a time of 42.02 seconds.
Bronzes and Finalists: The Future of Nerja Athletics
The bronze medals came from the female sprinters. Lucía Vaca was third in the 100 metres with 12.06 seconds, and Leire García repeated bronze in the 200 metres with 24.30 seconds, also achieving her personal best. The women's 4x100 relay team —made up of Avril Macel, Noa García, Lucía Vaca, and Leire García— also won bronze with a time of 47.60 seconds.
Additionally, five Nerja athletes achieved finalist positions: Fabián Serrano (4th in 400m hurdles), Martín Escobar (5th in 400m hurdles), Eugenia Doña (5th in hammer throw), Javier Polanco (7th in 200m), and Natalia Jaramillo (8th in 100m hurdles).
According to club sources, the outcome is "extraordinary" and demonstrates the work of the Nerja youth system, which continues to yield results at the national level.
For the residents of Nerja, this success is a source of pride and a sign that grassroots sports in the town are thriving. The club, sponsored by Trops-Cueva de Nerja, has become a benchmark for Andalusian athletics at lower categories.
The next important event for these young athletes will be the U20 Spanish Championship, where several of them will seek to repeat or improve these records. Meanwhile, in Nerja, they are already celebrating a dream weekend that puts the municipality on the national athletics map.
