The Local Government Board of Nerja has given the green light to the renovation project of the old Fernández Olmo building, which will involve an investment of 956,145 euros and will be renamed Alcalde Antonio Jiménez Gálvez.

The Nerja Town Council has approved the basic project for the renovation works of the municipal building located at number 2 Antonio Jiménez Street, known as Fernández Olmo. This action, corresponding to the second phase of the rehabilitation of the property, will involve an investment of 956,145.03 euros and a completion period of ten months.

The mayor, José Alberto Armijo, has reported that the building will be renamed Alcalde Antonio Jiménez Gálvez, in recognition of the first mayor of the locality. “It is a just and deserved recognition of the first mayor of Nerja, a person very much loved and respected by the people of Nerja,” Armijo stated. The building is located next to the street that also bears his name, and the mayor has considered that “it constitutes an appropriate place to acknowledge his career.”

The project includes providing an independent access to the remaining floors of the building and adapting its facilities to enable its use. This second phase will continue the works carried out on the ground floor, which was renovated for its transfer to the Employment Department of the Junta de Andalucía, with the aim of housing the new office of the Andalusian Employment Service (SAE).

The agreement approved by the Local Government Board also includes the initiation of procedures for contracting the drafting of the execution project, which will be carried out in phases. This document will serve as the basis for the subsequent tendering of the works.

The renovation of the Fernández Olmo will allow for an expansion of municipal services and improve attention to citizens. The ground floor already houses the SAE office, which serves the residents of Nerja and the Axarquía region. With the completion of the second phase, the building will have more spaces enabled for administrative or social use, yet to be determined.

The ten-month period for the execution of the works means that, if the contracting procedures are expedited, the work could begin at the end of 2026 or the beginning of 2027. The Town Council hopes that the renovation will be completed before the end of the next municipal term.

The naming of the building as Alcalde Antonio Jiménez Gálvez has been well received by the residents, who fondly remember the first mayor of democracy in Nerja. Jiménez Gálvez governed the municipality during the early years of the transition and is considered a reference in local history.

With this investment, the Nerja City Council continues with its plan for the rehabilitation of municipal properties, which also includes improvements in other public buildings such as the market or the town hall. The work on the Fernández Olmo represents another step in the modernization of municipal infrastructures.
