The Antequera City Council, through the Health, Environment and Sustainability department, insists on the need to maintain protective measures against the West Nile virus during the summer.
The Antequera City Council has once again called on the population to strengthen prevention measures against the West Nile virus during the summer weeks. The delegated councillor for Health, Environment and Sustainability, María Enrile, has conveyed a message of calm and prudence, reminding that prevention is the most effective tool to reduce risks.
“We want to convey a clear message to the population: this is not about generating alarm, but about reminding the importance of maintaining simple protective measures that are within everyone's reach,” Enrile stated. The West Nile virus is primarily transmitted through the bites of Culex mosquitoes, which are present in Andalusia, and in most cases, it does not produce symptoms or they are mild. However, the councillor has emphasised the need to heighten prevention, especially for older people, vulnerable individuals, or those with pre-existing conditions.
The Antequera Council reminds the importance of avoiding accumulations of stagnant water in patios, terraces, pots, plant saucers, buckets, fountains, gutters, or any other container where mosquitoes can breed. It is also recommended to maintain proper care of swimming pools and damp areas, as well as to periodically check domestic or communal spaces where water may be retained.
Alongside these measures, Enrile has insisted on the need to protect oneself from bites by using mosquito nets on windows and doors when possible, approved repellents following the instructions on the packaging, as well as light clothing that covers the skin, especially during the peak activity hours of these mosquitoes, such as dawn and dusk.
The councillor has highlighted that citizen collaboration is essential, as “small gestures in each household help reduce places where mosquitoes can breed and contribute to protecting everyone's health.” In this sense, she has appealed for shared responsibility to maintain these preventive guidelines during the hottest months.
María Enrile has also reminded that the Antequera City Council already launched a specific information campaign in spring regarding prevention against the Nile mosquito, skin protection, and heat strokes, in collaboration with health professionals, and that this message is now reinforced in light of the evolving situation in various parts of Andalusia.
“The City Council remains attentive to the indications of health authorities and maintains our commitment to information, prevention, and awareness. We want citizens to be informed, act responsibly, and adopt these measures as normal, without alarm, but with prudence,” Enrile concluded.
