The City Council of Antequera and journalist Rocío Moltó presented a 35-minute documentary featuring ten testimonies about the declaration of the Dolmens Site as World Heritage on July 15, 2016.
The documentary, lasting 35 minutes, captures the testimonies of ten people who experienced that day firsthand, when UNESCO declared the Dolmens of Antequera World Heritage. Journalist Rocío Moltó coordinated the project, which includes archival material from local media and reporters who covered the event.
Key Testimonies from That Historic Day
Among the testimonies are those of the mayor of Antequera, Manuel Barón, deputy mayors Juan Rosas and Ana Cebrián, the former director of the Dolmens Bartolomé Ruiz, and Spain's ambassador to UNESCO, Elisa Cabo de Vega. Also participating are the former president of the Málaga Provincial Council, Elías Bendodo; former Culture Minister Rosa Aguilar; cartoonist Ángel Idígoras; and the then head of Tourism for the Costa del Sol, Arturo Bernal.
The documentary not only narrates the euphoria of the designation but also captures the context of that day, which coincided with the attempted coup in Turkey. As Moltó explained, the recording aims to preserve the memory of "what happened that day" and show how it was experienced from Antequera.
An Altruistic Project Seeking Exposure
Mayor Manuel Barón thanked Rocío Moltó for carrying out the project altruistically and announced that it will be submitted to film festivals. "We are committing the cultural reputation of the city by linking the heritage narrative with a sensitive political episode; the success lies in the rigor and narrative balance," Barón emphasized. Moltó's intention is to showcase the work at festivals in Málaga, Andalusia, and, if possible, nationally, to promote the name of Antequera.
The presentation took place on the afternoon of Wednesday, July 15, in Antequera, coinciding with the tenth anniversary of the declaration. The documentary includes images from media outlets and local reporters, such as Paco Peramos from Tele Torcal; Raúl Pérez from El Sol de Antequera; and Pablo Guerrero from the City Council of Antequera.
The Legacy of the Dolmens of Antequera
The Dolmens Site of Antequera, consisting of the dolmens of Menga, Viera, and El Romeral, as well as the Cerro de la Virgen, was declared World Heritage in 2016. Since then, it has become a cultural and tourist reference in the province of Málaga. The documentary aims to pay tribute to that achievement and serve as a reminder of the importance of preserving heritage.
For the residents of Antequera, the declaration marked a turning point in the city's international projection. The documentary captures the pride of the Antequerans and the collective effort that made the recognition possible. "It was a day of immense joy, but also of uncertainty due to what was happening in Turkey," recalls one of the testimonies.
The film, which does not yet have a public release date, is expected to be screened in the coming months in Antequera and other locations in the province. Meanwhile, the City Council is working on disseminating the material to reach as many people as possible.
