The Málaga municipality of Antequera has begun the 2026-2027 school year with 5,237 students enrolled in Early Years, Primary and Secondary, to which 861 from Bachillerato will be added starting from September 15.
The school year 2026-2027 has kicked off in Antequera with a total of 5,237 students enrolled in Early Years, Primary and Secondary education. This figure includes students from educational centres in the urban area and the districts of Cartaojal, La Joya, and La Higuera, according to data provided by the City Council during the institutional visit to CEIP Infante Don Fernando.
By levels, 963 students are enrolled in Early Years, 2,318 in Primary education, and 1,956 in Secondary education. These figures will be joined on September 15 by 861 students from Bachillerato.
The mayor, Manolo Barón, was accompanied during the visit by the deputy mayor for Works and Maintenance, Teresa Molina; the councillor for Education, Sara Ríos; the councillor for Childhood, María Sierras; the councillor for Youth, Marta González, and the director of the centre, Juan Jesús Peñafiel.
The City Council allocates 110,000 euros each year for the maintenance and conservation of schools under municipal jurisdiction. In recent months, the centres have submitted over 220 requests for action, which are addressed according to their nature and municipal competencies. Those related to investment are referred to the Territorial Delegation of the Junta de Andalucía.
Summer work has focused on metalwork, masonry, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electricity, gardening, and general repairs. The schools Romero Robledo, Veracruz, Reina Sofía, León Mota, San Juan, and Infante Don Fernando, as well as the Los Patos centre and the rural schools of Cartaojal-La Peña, La Joya-Atalaya, and La Higuera-Atalaya have been subject to intervention.
At CEIP Infante Don Fernando, chosen for the start-of-year visit, work has included painting, cleaning of the patio grilles, repairing tiles in several classrooms, and reviewing the plumbing in the bathrooms, among other actions.
“It has been a very intense few months of work by the Operational Services,” highlighted deputy mayor Teresa Molina, who emphasised the coordination with the Electricity and Education Areas and the management of the centres.
Molina reminded that the work “does not stop in summer” and that the City Council maintains permanent attention to incidents during the school year. “We are starting the school year and new incidents are already coming in from the Education Area, which are being addressed according to our capabilities,” she added.
The mayor emphasised this continuity: “Just because we make this effort every summer does not mean we do not continue to act throughout the rest of the year. We keep addressing the requests that educational centres bring to us.”
Barón expressed gratitude for the work of municipal employees and the collaboration of management teams to ensure that the centres face the new school year in the best possible conditions.
